Default I need some work done...

I hear a light front end "clunk" at low speed over small bumps. My mechanic says it's inner tie rod ends.

What's that job entail and what's ballpark cost?

It could be sway bar bushings.

I agree.

Did the mechanic get under the car and get his hands on things to make his determination or just listen to you and/or the car?

First thing I would do is get under the car with an impact wrench and tighten everything, including in the suspension. I had a similar problem and it was a slightly loose sway bar bolt.
