A reason why I pull my battery out and put it in the basement over the winter. The case could have cracked and spilled acid all over your electronics. You should always check on the battery once in awhile.
My battery tender is the Vette's alternator. I drive the vette for 20 miles at least once a week all Winter long. I live where we get plenty of snow (albeit not this year) and as long as there is no snow or salt on the road, I drive. I just do not trust using any tender on any battery.
...I am wondering if the tender could have overcharged it or it was just normal battery failure. I have used it the last 3 years with no issues.
If the tender is fine, it should not have overcharged the battery.
A patented float and pulse maintenance strategy ensure that once fully charged, the battery is safely maintained at maximum capacity indefinitely by the charger, which is crucial to maximize battery lifespan. Many CTEK battery chargers have a RECOND function.
Your battery may have been the culprit - it quit taking the charge and once it was without charge it froze. You definitely need a new battery and make sure you check the tender next year a week or so after you put your Vette into storage to make sure it's all good. Then check the tender every few weeks after that to see that it keeps the battery charged.
