Started looking at C4s and am thinking about a C5. A six speed would be a must. Would mostly use the car for cruising around town & weekend trips with the wife, but would occasionally autocross & drag race the car. Overall the wife would be happier with a convertible, but she would be OK w/ a coupe. If I would get a convertible would high speed track events be possible? What about if I had a roll bar put in? Or is this not practical.
Not seeing a big price difference between 97-01 vs. 02-04. Were the 02-04 better cars? The last years for any generation usually are. Also what are the key options that I should look for? I assume that the HUD, but what else.
Either a 6spd Coupe or Z would do. I planned on changing the heads, cam and suspension anyway so I saved a few bucks and opted for the Base C5 as opposed to the Z06.
Stay with the '01 and newer. Some parts are not available for the earlier cars any more. Such as the SWPS and the EBCM. They did the most improvements in '01. Love my '04 with the Z51 package.
If you like top off driving, go for the base or convertible as the Z06 has a hard roof. You can mod teh engine and suspension to perform like a z06 but you cant modify the z06 for open roof driving without compromising structural rigidity.

Good advice. And be sure to read the stickies at the top of the page that deals with buying a Corvette as well as the one in C5 Tech that deals with weights/measures/etc.
