Car will not start
Apparently when parking in the garage the last time the car worked, the cable from the automatic shifter to the transmission snapped! Even though the gear shift was in park (which I did check when the car would not start), the car thought that it was not in park. It did just what the logic told it...
Case closed. Been driving over 50 years, never had that problem!

First if you have a multi meter on the battery while trying to start and there is no change in voltage. The starter is not engaging BUT,
You say the head lights dim , the two don't go together.
Now you car if every thing is working correctly , will start with 10.5v read while cracking the engine.
In general the lights dimming while cranking the engine point to the
battery, bad earth, starter failure.
I would like to know can you hear the starter solenoid clicking in and out.
That is a sign the voltage is low.
