I have a 98 corvette and today a small chip became a huge crack. I talked to safe lite and they said the glass is around 240.00 and the molding is over 1000.00. They claim the molding has to be replaced if installing a new windshield. Has anyone heard of this, and is it true?

I had something hit my windshield and crack it a couple weeks ago on the drive home from the dealer from buying the car.....had to have the windshield replaced and the guy who did it told me exactly the same thing on the molding, said parts alone for the job were about $1600...also if you have HUD it requires a different windshield that is more expensive.
Luckily I have $0 deductible on comprehensive so it didn't cost me anything...
When I had the Windshield on my 2004 Z06 replaced at Safelite they never mentioned anything about my molding and didn't replace it, and it never leaked......
When I had the windshield replaced on my '03 Z06 the person who did the job just said he had Corvette experience and it was time consuming to do correctly. He worked in my home garage, which he said was nicer than his shop. Anyway, he replaced nothing and did a perfect job. He looks exactly like original and has never leaked, plus he used the correct windshield for the HUD. Find someone who knows the cars.
For what it is worth if you take your time and know what you are doing the trim can be re-used with great results. A lot of CF members have had non-HUD windshields installed and their HUD works just fine without paying the premium price for the HUD windshield. The stock Z06 windshield is thinner and lighter than the standard C5 windshield but they have not been manufactured for a long time now and to find one will be almost impossible and very expensive, many Z06 owners have had to install the thicker heavier windshield and they work just fine.
Just had Safelight do mine and the only must replace item I was told is the rubber trim across the top of the windshield, of course every car is different and the cars condition could warrant additional items needing replacement.
By the way total cost out the door was $294

It's fine, I had a regular windshield before as well, insurance sent me a check and I spent it how I felt best served me (and my wallet)
I've looked through both and I can't tell the difference honestly

Is there a scrip or part number on the windshield noting HUD or Standard?
Thanks!

I'm certain there is, I don't know it myself, But the difference in cost was ridiculous IMHO, My car did not come with the HUD option, I added it myself about 5 years ago, To be honest I very seldom actually use it, Every since I added a real shift light, I rely on it mostly when doing full throttle pulls into the upper rev range, It enables me to keep totally focused on the road and not the gauges, and man when it hits the set RPM and lights up you know its time to shift, Really love that thing and highly recommend one for anyone that drives their car at the limit.

The stock HUD also has a SHIFT light, I believe a non-Z06 C5 is set at 5750rpm's and a Z06 is set at 6250rpm's. With the HUD turned on the word SHIFT flashes when these rpm's are reached.
I think the OP's thread has just been stolen

Yeah I was aware of the factory shift light, But its not in your face like an aftermarket one, but for most it would be fine, Something about wrangling 600 plus RWHP things are happening so fast that the in your face shift light works better, at least for me anyway.
Plus you can adjust the shift light to whatever RPM suites you.

I just had my 2002 w/s replaced with OEM approved by ins co. No weatherstrip required. I mentioned to the installer that there was a leak on my left knee (rag top) and he put extra goo and it stopped the leak. Ins paid 100%, cash price installed about $1400 ($1100 for glass). GM Parts Online for vert w/hud $769. Local glass co. ordered OEM from dealer.
