rear diff fluid change on 97
I am in the process of changing out all the fluids in my newly purchased 97. I see lots of conflicting info on the proper fluid for the rear diff. The Owner's Manual calls for GL5 Dino (non synthetic) and one 4 oz bottle of GM posi lube. The GM part number they supply no longer exists for the diff fluid (12345977).
Some are using the newer GM LS 75W-90 part number 88862624 that has the friction modifier in it.
What is the consensus on what I should use? Not a fan of the "boutique" fluids like Royal Purple or Redline or Amsoil, although I know many have had good luck with them. Car is in the air and ready.
Thanks. I am now kind of leaning that way. I used it before in a C6 Z06 that I had. Just wasn't sure if it was compatible with the C5.
How many miles have you put on with it in there?
Probably 25k since the differential service. At the time, my research led me to believe that LS specific gear oil was made in response to owner's complaints that the old gear oil wasn't working as well in the newer engines. So they upped the limited slip additive. I've never had any issues with it. Just make sure you do the figure 8's and wait I think 300 miles after changing it before going full throttle. The new oil has to go through a few temperature cycles before all of the anti-wear additives are active.

Thanks alot. Yes, I have always done the figure eights to work it into the clutches on my older cars. I just read, during my search on this topic, about taking it easy for 300 miles. Never heard that before.
