Ideas for how to get this out? Was there when I bought it; assuming it is mud. I've tried spraying it with soap and water, loosening it up with a brush, and putting a shop vac on it to suck it out. I've even tried poking a needle just in the screen to loosen up the dirt. I tried taking the door panel off to attempt cleaning it from the inside out but apparently wasn't doing it correctly as I broke off a couple of prongs and stopped. Can the speaker cover be taken off itself or does the whole door panel have to be taken off for access? Or, other ideas for getting the mud out? Thanks so much guys.

Sometimes when you pull on the door panel an attachment pin will break. Replacements can be bought at most auto parts stores. I would not spray any more water on the cover with the speaker still behind it. Once you get the door panel off, you should be able to remove the speaker and then you can either try and clean the cover or I do think the cover itself will come off and it can be repainted.
Yeap rust mine had take. Clean it with a wire brush then order replacement color through amazon. It said it was for interior but worked realy well on metal and matched the color.
Once you get the door panel loose, the speaker grille can be removed by bending the built-in metal tabs. The Bose speaker is attached to the door itself and does not need to be removed.
While you're in there, take out the Bose "hat pin" emblem in your pic and glue it to the grill to save some hassle later when you get the dredded speaker buzz. 😎

The tabs will allow you to remove the grill easily the more you straighten/flatten them the easier it comes off. Try washing it with a medium stiff brush. It no luck, getter some satin black paint and be done with it.
I seen them sold on e bay new for about $40- Easily removed from door panel once off by straightening tabs. Would just re spray area. Don't believe it is rust caused by resting ones leg against...really don't know who drives like that, lol. Probably some surface cleaner that did not agree with painted surface.

I had the same problem with rusty speaker screens. I was going to remove the screens, remove the rust and paint them if I could not find them. I did find them and I bought them from Corvette Salvage https://www.corvettesalvage.com
.
Here is the inside of the door skin. You can see where it attaches on to the door and the first shows how the tabs are folded over to hold the speaker cover on. Once the cover is removed just paint it, let dry and reinstall
I need to do this to mine as well. They are shale colored and because of the color it is obvious that the stains are rust. Does anyone know what color of SEM paint will match the shale color of the 2003 50th Anniversary Edition interior? At this point I was just thinking to match up some spray paint that was close in color by Krylon or Rustoleum.
