If they honestly didn't know it was $12900 by mistake that would mean nobody else came looking. OR they did, never talked price because they looked and passed on the car before getting that deep.
I dunno...maybe over thinking this.
I just remember working at a dealership in college that even the crappiest of cars always seemed to find a home. This cars been sitting nearly half a year!!!
That was a low ball! How much do they really want for that $13,000 car? Honestly $14,000 isn't bad if everything checks out but I don't like their sales tactic.
Read one of the auto vs manual threads and decide what side of the fence you are on because it is a commitment.
I feel better knowing this list of mods is not a monster list. I don't know much about these things and it sounded like a ton. In college I owned Civic SIs and VW VR6s but never modded them. I currently have a Chevy HHR SS that I bought cuz I needed the space (kids...3 and counting). Again, never did the stage 1 on that but have owned 2 HHR SSs and loved them both.
So...here's the next step 2 pieces of information on the 01.
The dealer had had this on internet special for $12,900. In their ad they basically said why pay the competition $17k on the same car?? Come to us and pay $12900!!!
This was on their website and 3rd party sites.
When we started finalizing prices their numbers were way way off and I was like where the hell are you guys coming up with these numbers???
Turns out out the car was $16999!!! The sales people were like "oh sorry...our 3rd party company that manages are site made a mistake!!! Let me talk to y GM to see what we can do".
So I ignored them for 3 days and last night they come back with "Great news!!! My GM said we can do it for $14999 which is our cost"!!
The other thing that bothers me is they've had this car for sale for 140+ days!
So either they were baiting people with the price or something else seems wrong.
I would have included that info the first time but wanted an unbiased opinions on the cars. Wasn't trying to be deceptive.
Went through that before with a very nice low mileage trans am. It was listed on autotrader for like 7k I emailed them and was getting everything in line to buy the car, it was in nv and I'm in la, and they later emailed me back saying the price was a mistake and literally doubled it. I was pissed. If it would've been local or closer it might've tried to press the issue or try to make them sell me the car for the original listed price. When people do stuff like that it makes me not want to spend my money with them no matter how good the deal is or seems to be.
I just keep envisioning the drive home with the top off and I want that so bad! Hard to just wait it out!
Make them an offer, even if less than they want or were asking. I bought my car from a BMW dealer that was 800 miles from home. They were at $18k when I offered them $15k and they turned me down. 2-3 weeks later they call to ask me if I still wanted the car and a deal was made.
Your offer is not binding if the car is not what you expect it to be, it's just a price negotiation. Also sometimes they just decide it's time for a vehicle to move on out. My car had been on the lot for at least four months.
I agree with others. If you like the car, pick a number lower than their initial offering "mistake" and give them your price OUT THE DOOR and your phone number, then walk away and see if it was meant to be. Don't listen to anything else they have to say.
Certainly don't want to insult anyone, BUT, I don't believe a damn thing a dealer says. He could tell me the sky was blue and I would still go outside to check for myself. I'm sure there are honest dealers out there, I just seem to have missed them. As soon as I get a bullshit routine I'm out of there. Always, always, try to independently verify anything a dealer tells you, just my opinion and experience talking here. Take care!
Honestly I would not buy any car from that dealer. It's not hard to be honest. If they are going to lie that much about the price what else are they over playing or not telling you. I've drove 5 hours to pick up a 04 cobra. Got there and it did not add up. I ate dinner and went back home. Guy called me 3 weeks later asking 3k less. I never responded.
If your hearts not set on either on do the right thing and find one you love. You'll be happier in the long run.
