Long story short: Either a bearing/coupling in the torque tube fell apart OR a bearing in the transmission died. There is a strange grinding noise (not grinding gears) when the clutch is depressed and is very noticeable with the car in neutral. As long as the clutch is in and the tube/trans isn't spinning then the noise is gone. Slowly let the clutch out and the noise comes back.
Car is completely apart- I skipped some steps so the torque tube and headers are still attached to the car- just no transmission.
I want to make sure it actually is the transmission so I want to start the car and see if the grinding noise is still coming from the torque tube. But the car wont start (weird). Does anyone know which of the transmission connectors needs to be connected for the car to start?
It spins over but wont actually start... and the security system is not happy.
That's odd. I've run my car with the entire torque tube, trans, cradle and diff out and on the ground.
Found out it was the ground on the driver side of the car (rear wheel well)- took it off thinking it was going to snag on the suspension when I lowered everything. FML.
ANYWAYS:
The grinding noise is still there. So I think torque tube or maybe the pressure plate of the clutch fell apart? No idea. It's pretty loud with the exhaust but I put a stethoscope (HAHA) on the torque tube and can confirm that the weird noise is still there.
Its like a scraping/grinding/ ticking noise. Clutch and torque tube bearings/bushings were replaced like 3 years ago.
Remove torque tube and inspect internals. Perhaps the guibos (rubber couplers) were installed incorrectly, which makes them fail in short order.
Another possibility is the pilot bearing.

Bolt holding a coupling together backed out and machined itself against a bearing in the torque tube (clutch/engine side, not transmission side). I kind of figured it was.
While the car is apart I'm changing bearings and stuff anyways. I do need to track down a new drive-shaft (anyone recommend anyone?)
Are there different bolts to use for those couplings too? Those torx are literally the worst thing ever to work with. I'd like to use a 12 point grd.10 bolt but I can't find the right length.
Those torx are indeed a nightmare, I snapped 2 bits trying to torque them to spec when replacing couplers. Be sure to use Loctite when reassembling.
I did too! in fact, I feel like its the same bolt that broke my last bit that actually backed out. There has got to be a better alternative to those Satanic Torx fasteners.
