My stock 2002 sounds like a sewing machine upon start up and doesn't quiet down until it is fully warmed up(about 15 mins of around town driving) and then purrs like a tiger. Have a reputable mech check it out just to be safe---there's no sense missing out on a nice ride for something that's not a problem.
If it's the car you want, I would take it out for a test drive again and make sure it has fully warmed up. Drive it out on the freeway for a few miles and then come back and listen. Many of those year engines have the infamous "cold engine knock" or "piston slap" as it is often called. It is my understanding the motors were designed with a piston a little loose in the cylinder until the metal warms and expands. It is nothing more than a ridiculous annoyance. There were tons of motors from those years that had it. I don't know how many gm pickups I have heard that clatter like diesel on start up and purr like a kitten after warmed up. You will have to decide if you want to live with that annoyance or not.
I agree with lonerider, if you want the car and still worried about the tick have a local mechanic check it out. It may cost a few bucks but you'll feel better about the purchase.
Thanks for the info guys. The sound really doesn't bother me. I was just worried something was wrong. I'm kinda in a unique situation where I'm on a family trip and took a detour to check the Vette out. So after 4hrs in the van the kids thought we arrived at the beach...but nope...we're at the car dealer (still 2 hrs to the beach)to look at dads crazy car...
So needless to say, the little lady and 3 kids were all tapping their watches with DAD LETS GO!!!!
I'll think about it
Googling C5 engine tick brings up a ton of posts and most saying it's normal. I don't know enough about cars to know better.

bought an 02 silverado new
didnt do the piston slap til around 140k (diesel like sound)
it had the infamous loud lifter noise after the 1st week no fix for it meaning there was a bulletin but no recall just the nature of the engine
179k and still going
found switching to dino oil quieted it down big time
with 10/30 syn sometimes it wasnt badother times it was embarrassing and sounded like it was going to scatter. Supposedly harmless but at a point was concerned about damage...dino oil where its at for that issue!
