Default Sticky Steering Wheel Hub Cover

I've noticed that my steering wheel center hub has become rather sticky, and seems like it can be easily scratched. I avoid touching it as a result. Is there a good cure for this? Anyone know the cause?

2001 convertible that sits a lot, often outside.

Have you used Armor All on it? When I bought mine, the dash, steering wheel and door panels were all sticky. The previous owner used Armour All. I cleaned it several times with vinyl cleaner and use only Aerospace 303. Now it stays dry and smooth. I used this to clean it before treating with 303:

No, I have never used Armor All on this car, ever. I am the original owner too. I might have spread Lexol on it. There is an interior detailer that is made by Lucas, I think, that I have used on it. Possibly Zaino products too. NOTHING has been used on it any time recently, but one day I got in the car and it was sticky. My dad's Mercedes got like that too, after my brother cleaned the interior of it once. That was even worse than this.

Once you remove all the sticky goo from the steering wheel center, then do use anything on it. I did the same removal process and now only use a mild soap to clean everything in the interior. When my vert does not have the protective cover on the top to protect from the sun, I have a dash pad and use a white towel to cover the steering wheel. It works great.

Common problem. I scrubbed mine and didn't put anything on it. After that it only required occasional cleaning.

If anyone mentions using goof off, DON'T.

Goof off is nothing but lacquer thinner, in a smaller container.

You should know what lacquer thinner does to any painted, or dyed surface.(it removes it), and in the case of vinyl, and plastic, it melts it.

Bob.
