Default Began and Finished Texas Speed Header Install

I decided to get a set of headers from Texas Speed for my 2002 Z06. I received them today.

I have to say that I am quite impressed with the build quality. I had Kooks headers on my 2006 GTO and the build quality of the Texas Speed headers and X-pipe is just as good. Nice welds and nice, flat header flange. No provision for the AIR injection system but I am going to remove this system from my car.

Nice Texas Speed plaque.

Nice welds on the primaries to the flange. Nicely flat and finished flange also.

Collector spike in the collector.

The headers come with AC Delco gaskets and O2 extensions. There are no O2 bungs in the X-pipe but that really doesn't matter as most people just disable those.

I got as far as installing the left and right headers which is the hardest part. On the driver's side, I did not disconnect the steering shaft but I did remove the lower engine mount bolt and jack the engine up about and inch. Along with doing this and removing the driver's side valve cover, I was able to just barely get the header in from the top.

Plenty of clearance from everything and no interferences with anything. Nice!

Passenger side also went in from the top. I unbolted the starter and moved it out of the way and also the valve cover. Went in pretty easy. Again, no interferences with anything and plenty of clearance all around.

View from below. I have not tightened up the header bolts yet. I will install the rest of the system first to get everything lined up. Looks like there will be plenty of ground clearance. O2 sensors have plenty of clearance.

That's it for now. I will finish up tomorrow. Thanks.

Finished installing everything today. I also completely removed the AIR injection system. What a convoluted system of tubing the AIR system is. Engine compartment is much cleaner and its so much easier to get to the plugs and wires.

I only did a quick test drive to make sure everything is okay. I haven't really opened her up yet but on the initial start and short drive, the sound is awesome. It is relatively quiet but there is a nice subtle bassy rumble when idling. Cruising is only a little bit louder.

I will go for a long drive later today to full test everything out. Thanks.

Looks great. I did my install the first winter after purchase (4 years). My flanges were not flat (had them milled), and my tubes hang a bit low on one side. But no interference anywhere, no problems since, sound great and runs great!
Agree on sound, nicer but not much louder at idle, sounds great higher up.

I would say that based on several posts I have read about Texas Speed headers, they have definitely improved them. The quality and fit is nearly or as good as Kooks, American Racing, LG, etc. The driver's side header does press against the clutch inspection cover but just barely. I don't consider this an issue as most manufactures headers bolt solidly to the inspection cover anyway. Everything else has good clearance.

I am really loving the sound of these headers with the catted X-pipe and stock Ti exhaust. Little bit louder at idle, quiet when cruising, but give it the beans and its full on RACE CAR! No drone either while cruising.

Butt dyno also seems like there is more mid range power also. I have not really opened it up yet; I am putting some miles on the tune so it settles in. Then I can datalog and let my remote tuner (Diablew) dial things in.
