Default Hood Latch Malfunction

I have noticed lately that my passenger side hood latch does not stay latched while driving the car. It has happened on several occasions.

Just today on my way home for work I noticed passenger side was unlatched, stopped opened the hood and shut it. Both sides seemed secure, drove for a while, hit some rough patches and noticed it had come unlatched again.

Has anyone experienced this? If so what did you do to resolve. Do i just need to purchase a new latch and install? Thanks.

Try squirting some White Lithium Grease or ACDelco Super Lube in the latch.

My 97 does the exact same thing on the passenger side occasionally. A little extra force with the heel of my hand on that side when closing usually works. May lube it up tonight. Driving 500 miles to Carlisle tomorrow. May need an adjustment.

Or you could lower the hood bumper a small amount and leave the latch alone. I recently had to raise my bumpers because the hood was rattling in the latches, and it only took about 1/8th of a turn to snug things up.

HTH, and have a good one,

after lubricating the hinges themselves you may want to adjust the bumpers first before messing with the hinge. If you loosen the hold nut you can turn the bumper inwards to the car which will bring the hood a little further inwards. The only issue will be if you go too far in it will potentially mis-align the hood relative to the fender.

Lubed the hinge last night. Stayed secure on my 40 mile commute to work this morning. Will see what happens on the way home.
