Everyone has their own preference when it comes to cleaning/detailing products. You'll get a hundred "this stuff is the best" suggestions.
Try a couple of them and see what works for you. As for cleaning i have seen suggested that you use a mild general cleaner such as Simple Green to remove dirt, dust, grime. Use water sparingly as you don't want to drown any of the electrical connections. Your only looking for trouble later. Wash, rinse, dry and dress / detail with whatever product you choose.
Pounder threw his 2 cents in so now it's my turn.
I like Adams In and Out Detail Spray. Gives a nice shine yet it's not greasy and doesn't attract and hold the dust like Armor-All

I just use a Swiffer Duster to remove the loose dust and then follow up with a moist Absorber (synthetic chamois) to wipe the plastic pieces down. If there is some grease/oil involved, then a rag with some Simple Green is used to clean it up. And once the engine bay is clean, a quick touch up each time you wash the car will keep it looking great.
I vac my engine compartment, have a bunch of various scrub brushes that I just use soap and water with, and finish off the plastic components and such with tire shine like Pounder mentioned. For rubber hoses and such I just wipe them down best I can.
Along this line do you use Chadwicks no tire sling on the hoses and the plastic parts? I use simple green to get the grease off, then rinse with water and just wiped the plastic parts down with a microsoft towel. Same with the hoses, but would like to put something on the hoses to keep them pliable but did not know what to use.

the Sling will make all rubber pliable and soft, (weatherstripping) !!!!!!!! It might be more amazing than the Yellow stuff !!!!!!

Learned the hard way many years ago to avoid Armor-All especially inside the car. Dealer put it on my dash when I lived in Tucson, AZ. Heat would cause Armor-All to leave a film on the windshield for years!
I also like the Adams Detail spray, and Simple Green if it's really necessary.
Thanks everyone, I will take all the advice and see what works well. I very leary about water in the engine compartment. I remember back in the day (80's) A friend of mine, his father had a 69 super bee, if I remember correctly, and he used to say that he steam cleaned the engine. Anyone ever hear of something like this?

Thank you
Sure, spayed the warm motor with degreaser and then pressure washed it.
