I had to replace my two front tires on my '03 Z06 and the Pilot Sport 2's were special order only...and $312 each. It appeared that the only mainstream performance tires still available in the OEM sizes are the PS2 and the Goodyear Eagle 1. I've had good luck with the PS2s, so stuck with 'em.
Open for suggestions on alternatives for the next set; I expect I'll move up on sizes to open up options...but I'm also interested in other brands for street and the occasional auto-X.
I remember this time with my '95 Impala SS where stock and performance parts moved out of the mainstream and into special order...and the plastic models moved into the discount bin :-(
You can go down to 255 or up to 275. Opens up your options a bit. 265 on a 17 is dead unfortunately. Couple minutes on tire rack looking at those prices, I made the decision pretty quickly. Got a pair of 275/40/17 BFG Comp 2's for less then one Goodyear F1.
Get the new Continental Extreme Contact Sports! They are just as good as the Michelins, but a lot cheaper. I have over 5k miles on mine (02Z) and they are awesome tires.

I know what you mean. I had a '96 Z/28 (same engine/transmission as your Impy) for a LONG time, but getting replacement parts for it, as well as reliability issues of the Opti-Spark ignition, gave me pause. So I regretfully sold it, a couple of years ago....
