Default 2002 Alternator Replacement

Sorry for the ramble on, but I'm new to this awesome sight. The chrome Valeo alternator ( approx $700.00) that came with my used 2002 six spd ragtop base model recently burned up. A reputable vette mechanic sent it out to get it rebuilt to save me some money but said it was toast and not rebuildable. Other than the negative battery cable burnt at the battery terminal connection, the diagnostic test said there were no shorts or related damage. Can anyone recommend a replacement at a reasonable cost? I don't care if its not chrome. I'd prefer whatever the original was - Valeo 110 amp? or ACDelco which gives it an OEM part number of 10316182. I have looked for hours on Amazon, etc. and the prices are all over the place. Thanks very much.

I could write a book on what doesn't work! I went through alternator Hell a few years ago with my 2001 and it is the only incident that almost caused me to get rid of my C5 in 17 years of driving it to date!

I never found anyone I trusted to rebuild my Valeo (still searching). However after trying three O'Reillys rebuilts and a $600 chrome Billet-Tech, in desperation as a Hail Mary, I ordered a rebuilt Tough-One from Advance Auto. Cheapest one of the bunch and it has performed flawlessly now for about 4 years and I drive my C5 every day. It even puts out more consistent power than either of my stock Valeos. It was only about $110. In the end, I think it is just luck-of-the-draw in getting a good one for a C5 in the end!

PS - I don't think any C5 came with a "chrome" Valeo from the factory?

No, but it could be like mine.... the guy buys a Valeo, has the outer shells taken off, chromed (mine are polished) and then reassembled.

I tried taking apart my stock alternator when I got my car to polish it up myself....ended up braking a perfectly good alternator. Traded it in as a core on another, lol. It was around $125-150 I think at Autozone.
