Remove the coating completely and reapply it, or just remove it completely and polish the wheels. I have polished a couple of sets of C3 alloy wheels and have had no issues with them. Typically once or twice a year I will use some polish on them and after almost 20 years they still look terrific.
Admittedly, I have not polished out a set of C5 thin-spokes, but I suspect the results would be the same.
