Default Tool kit for C5

After breaking down on I10 in the middle of nowhere, the idea of a compact tool kit sounds good.

When traveling for vacation with luggage space is tight, so my regular tools would take up too much space.

Everything seems to be metric so that could save space.

Do any of you carry any, where do you keep them?

What broke on your trip?
I carry a few tools and parts that don't take up much space. I carry a thermostat because no one is going to have this one in stock. Might save a day or two when a shop has to order one. In case I throw a belt I have the old ones in the trunk and a 15mm socket to put it back on. Battery wrenches. Can of tire sealer/inflator. Box of assorted fuses. Duck tape and electrical tape. Quart of oil. Some rags. Small vise grip. Utility knife. Battery jump pack.
Not a lot of things that can be fixed on these cars when something breaks.
I keep it all in the two side compartments in the trunk.

The idler pulley for the main belt came off, I couldn't find it, too damn hot 100 degrees out.

The thing that stinks it was brand new(new belts, both idlers, and both tensioners), also lost the front dust shield and bolt to the pulley.

I must have not had it tight enough, why else would it come off?

Did you torque the bolt? I think it is 37 ft lbs. If not, that might be why.

I did the same thing on my Cadillac. Didn't tighten the idler pulley bolt enough. The bolt broke. I was very lucky there were a few threads of the bolt outside the block. I put a nut with red locktite on those threads. Next day was able to unscrew the bolt with a wrench. Whew! Otherwise would have needed to jack up or remove engine to drill it out. Don't know what the proper torque is but I put new bolt in TIGHT with blue loctite.

I am considering getting a kit. On the road you are probably limited to repairs that can be done at a parts store parking lot or road side.
A metric ratchet set, box wrenches, pliers and screw drivers might be handy.
I have a jump starter, tire plugs and a tire inflater.

I have a leather Corvette bag for storage.

A torque wrench is a good investment. Could save you money.

No, I was in a hurry! Lol

I will use the torque wrench from now on, being in a hurry cost me $$ and about 5 hours.

I have a coupe and carry a selection of metric wrenches and sockets/ratchets, a pair of pliers, a selection of screwdrivers, a crescent wrench and a few other miscellaneous tools. It all fits in a smaller plastic tool box and that goes in the middle compartment in the trunk. In addition, I have an air compressor and a plug kit in the other rear compartments.

I think the best way to approach a little tool kit is thinking about possible, common repairs you might have to make. Tools to replace the battery, your choice of tire repair/inflation tools, maybe a bulb or two. As someone else mentioned, a spare serp belt isn't a bad idea. Jumper cables/compact jump box is a given.

It sucks that happened to you OP, I've always wondered how horrible it would be to break down in the desert like that! I don't think a tool kit would have helped you too much though (unless you had found the pulley). Still, not a bad idea and one I should get on putting into action myself.

I have a coupe so in the rear center storage compartment (I removed the CD Player), I have 2 safety vests, small halon fire extinguisher, heavy duty jumper cables, tire plugs/tool and slime with Z06 tire inflator. Multi-changeable screw driver, channel lock pliers, crescent wrench, needle nose pliers, fuses, a couple relays and a powerful led flash light.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, a 5th of Jameson’s just in case I run out of fuel.

I bought this compact BMW almost new jack on ebay for around 25 bucks. Works good when I tested in my garage, but I have not used it in an emergency yet. Takes up very little space.

I forgot. I bought a set of auto transmission cable bushings for 12 bucks that I keep in the car tool kit. Might save me a truck ride someday.
