This message has shown up the last two times I have gotten in my 2003 C5 "Garage Queen" with a little over 16K on the odometer. "Service Steering Column" Does anyone know what service needs to be performed? Would be most appreciative of the feedback.
Read the stickies regarding the column lock issues. At the absolute most you'll probably need to install a CLB if you don't already have one (like LMC5).
Column lock issues don't care if your car is a garage queen. People can have 500 miles on their C5 and it have column lock issues and some have driven 150,000 miles and never experienced it. There's no real rhyme or reason.
Actually there is. Usually low battery voltage triggers this message. But you are correct, it can happen to any C5 at any time. I'm guessing my 02 only had about 10K when mine froze. That was not a good day. It happened shortly AFTER I had the GM recall done on it.
A well-respected Corvette service tech (I believe it was Paul K) wrote a post on this in another forum several years back. He had seen many of these same issues, and claimed it was by far away a battery issue, specifically low voltage as mentioned above. These cars still take a minimal draw off of the battery even when parked. So if yours sits for longer periods the battery may be discharged just enough to trigger the issue.
However as mentioned above an LMC5 will permanently take care of the issue at the expense of disabling the column locking mechanism.
All of you that mentioned the battery as the cause are SPOT ON as they say. I just looked in my records and saw that my ACDelco (1st replacement) battery, a 75-5 ACDelco Professional series, was purchased and installed on 11 May 2009. I think I got my money's worth out of that one! And, yes, it will be another ACD branded one after working for that division of GM for 34 years as a sales rep. What can I say! That "Garage Queen" is idle quite a bit, but on a trickle charger. Thanks all!!
