finally drove it: observations
Hey all,
So I came back from deployment a few weeks early due to a death in the family. After things settled down a bit i checked out the vette for the first time. I think its been cathartic.
The battery had already been deep cycled previously so I put a new one in and charged it. I needed a failed smog report to get a 30 day permit on it, so I drove the 1 mile to have it tested and it passed. that was a bit of a surprise to me... is that even possible? it has a very strong exhaust smell so I'm suspecting no cat and maybe a tune or a spacer or something. I've had very little time to even look more into it but I'll be able to now that I'm on R&R.
My observations so far: it takes a bit of force to pop it into each gear, and it pops out of reverse sometimes. Lemme just say THAT is embarrassing.
the butt dyno tells me it hasn't lost too much of it's stock power over the years (I did take it 100 miles to base with expired tags, I couldn't help myself).
the HUD has dropped. tedious but I'll fix it.
kind of rough idle. I think it just needs a tune up. quiet though, no squeaks or lifter noise.
under the hood I see open conical intake filters , and the proform valve covers with coil relocation brackets, and MSD coils and cables. I did look at the balancer pulley, no discernable wobble.
Sorry for being all over the place! I've read about shifter adjustment, ranger method, and the washer mod, I'm hoping something makes shifting a bit smoother. any opinions or observations about any of this would be greatly appreciated!

Melting Slicks
The ECM may need more drive/learn time and a couple tanks of quality detergent gasoline will, according to a Pontiac engineering report, be as effective as an additive.
Wondering if the clutch needs a bleeding, maybe fluid change after the sit.
Sorry for your loss, but thanks for serving!

Welcome back Robert, although sorry you had to return early under these circumstances. I believe you are totally correct about your Vette serving as a catharsis.
I agree with whalepirot that changing your fluid may be the fix for your clutch.
Good luck.
Thank you for your service!

To put an end cap on this thread...
Went over and helped.
I brought a bunch of tools but turned out he had plenty already.
I apologize that I didn't take many pics like normal.
Also, (to people that know me and would be disappointed) there's no pictures of large quantities of beer being consumed but trust me there was plenty.
Some Snapon/Mac tools I brought
We talked before and he all his supplies lined up. Changed the engine oil, trans oil, diff oil, changed plugs, all front turn marker lights including a turn socket that was damaged/melted.
Some of the supplies
Here's the man figuring out the transmission setup.
He bought this pump beforehand which worked like a charm.
The C5z has the fill plug stuffed with a sensor.
I know Corvetteforum guys would like this, especially in Off Topic...
His lovely wifey made us Sammiches.
Turning the diff drain plug. BTW, the drain is a 10mm hex bit. -I left my hex set at home and we had to drive to get the tool.
Used my 30 year old Cub Scout knife to open all containers
(Too bad what the Cub Scouts have recently become.... I refuse to let my 8 year old son join.... it's not the same) Rant /off.
Gotta get rid of this....
Better. The fact it was a fresh decal made it easy.
Very expensive coils and valve covers came with the car.
Changed all the plugs, copper anti-seize on the new threads.
Didn't get pics of the front light socket replacement... sorry.
Traffic home sucked (Atlanta)... but made a new friend.
God Speed back from Afghanistan. Best wishes man.
