Dealer is trying to take you for a ride.
Never tell salespeople you have a trade in. First arrive at an agreement on the car you want to buy then ask what they would give you for your car.
Try to sell it yourself, you will get a much better price. Dealership only offers wholesale price.
May not be the dealer. I bought my 03 Z for 18k but no bank would finance a 14 year old car for 18k. I had to do a signature loan. Also when I went to transfer the title, Texas said it was only worth 11k.
Just sell it on craigslist or on this forum. A dealer will never pay you it's full worth since they are middlemen and are buying it to flip and make a profit.
Plenty of people would pay $22k+ for that car in a heartbeat.
I work at a dealership and all these web sites, like KBB try and tell you what your car is worth...BS. call them and ask them how much they will give you, nothing, most don't buy cars, and if they will buy it, they tell you thousands below what they said you should get for it when you trade it in! Your car is only worth what someone will give you. The dealership takes all the risks, they also have a large overhead, cost of insurance, employees, advertising, taxes and so on. Most banks won't finance older cars and this makes the market smaller when the dealership puts it up for sale. Most people don't have 20+k cash to buy a car and if they do, they don't normally buy a 15+ year old car. We just bought a 02 silver Z06 with 16500 miles on it, garage kept, owner passed away and son has had it for years sitting in a garage. He got 16K from us on a cash buy. We put on new tires, changed all the fluids, brakes and detailed it total of $1600 to get it ready for sale. Then advertising and so on, asking 24k, will probably take less, but you see, it's business, the dealership takes all the risks, there has to be profit to stay in business. Hope this helps.
Completely agree with iridelow, the dealerships aren't stealing anybody's money, they're making a living like the rest of us. Every day I go to work, I get paid. Cool.
The dealership takes some risk beyond that, reputation if something goes wrong after the purchase or sale, etc.
If you don't like the price, move on and sell privately or trade somewhere else.
If the car is in as good of shape as it should be for those miles then I would have been pretty upset with that offer, probably would have said a few curse words. I realize they are a business and need to make money but that is a crap offer in my opinion. No way would I consider that, I would try and sell privately. They would prob put your car on the lot for at least 10k more than that offer.
