C7 style data recorder in a C5?
So the interior is getting work this winter and one of the mods is a double din with Android based touch screen. Since most of the ones I have looked at have a camera input that is usually used for a backup camera, I thought why not front mount it?
I used an app a while back call ALap Recorder that used the phone camera and gps to record your lap and chart the course and speed. It could also tie into the OBD2 port and get engine data as well, but I didn't use that feature.
But with something like that running with a bumper mounted camera, it could make for some cool video shoots. Seemed like a cool idea and the whole setup is about $200 + console. I did a search before posting this but didn't find any.
Anybody else running a video data recorder setup in their C5?
An app like this Track Addict

I thought about going this route with an android HU as well. As for the app, I use Race Chrono, but will be getting Harry's lap timer which a lot of the HPDE guys use that has all the goodies to create overlays with data on vids.

I can't even find the app I used when I had my C4, but it worked pretty well. I figure once I have everything together, I can try a few different apps and see what works best.
Hell, I might write my own if I'm not happy with what is out there.

Interesting thread. Please report back how well what you install works.

Oh for sure. I only posted this because I don't want to reinvent the wheel if a perfectly good wheel exists. Sounds like it might not, so I will wing it.
eBay started the thought process. I just figured I have little use for a backup camera, but a front facing data recorder could be pretty cool.
I just want to find the right camera that has minimal distortion and not a fisheye view.

I use a gopro suction cup mounted to the windscreen. For data I use an external gps in the center console (there is an advantage to being made of SMC instead of metal) and an OBS reader. Track addict ties everything together and I use racerender for the overlay.
Example:
It serves my purposes. The only thing I wish it can do that the C7's PDR can, but phone based systems like Track Addict can't is to export the data to a desktop for analysis and comparison. There are systems that can do that, though. It all depends on what you want and how much you want to pay.

I have a nice GoPro setup, but I was looking for something more permanent and the head unit is set up for it.
Besides, nothing says "I'm doing something stupid..." like driving around with a GoPro stuck to your car, lol.

I looked into doing something similar with my Joying unit, but my purpose was as a dashcam rather than track recording, though they end up doing essentially the same thing. What you can do is use a USB webcam, and connect it into the USB. You'll get much better resolution footage, plus there are apps that can actually handle a USB camera. I doubt there are any apps that will record the RCA footage.
For me, since I wanted a dashcam purpose, I ended with the conclusion that there was no good option that tied into the headunit. The best alternative I came up with was to by a dashcam that had wifi, and then have the headunit connect to the camera by wifi whenever I want to pull some videos from the dashcam.

So far I like it, except for a few quirks. On a hot day, it will sometimes not turn on the amp, and when the cores are hot it tends to throttle and cause bluetooth music to stutter. I plan to mod it for better cooling. I also have it rooted with bluetooth tethering, which means I can run Waze off of the Joying unit instead of mirroring my phone, which makes my phone get really hot.

I was looking at a 720p 170 degree FPV camera to use. I figured that was plenty of resolution for my needs. It's a cheap project, should be fun.

I like the SJCAM with wi-fi. It uses an android app for wi-fi or you can plug it into the USB port. It looks just like a Go-Pro though. Not stealthy.

That's what I have now, my fake GoPro. It works awesome. I just think the FPV mounted in the fog light hole would be a great perspective.
