Hey guys, this will be my first winter and I plan on disconnecting the battery. The car is an hour away so I cant take a look under the hood right now, but do I need to bring any tools with me to disconnect the negative post?
It's a side post battery and space is very tight

you should take it out if you disconnect, if it goes down without charge and freezes it will be junk !!!! put it in a warm place on a rubber mat !!!
. Not only that but the case will likely crack and leak acid. Had that happen with a car some time ago. I accidentally left the dome light on and it was a couple days before I went back to fire it up. Couldn't get the battery jumped so I pulled it and took it inside to charge. Didn't realize the case was cracked until I found holes in my jacket. Fortunately no damage was done to the car.
Can't hurt to remove the battery! Having it stored in a fairly warm place will help. Should the battery case ever crack from freezing, the electrolyte in the battery could drain down onto the ECM and destroy it.
Besides the 5/16" or 8mm wrench to remove the battery cables, you will need a 13mm socket and a 6" to 8" extension. Use a 3/8" drive ratchet and extension and socket. This is for the hold down tab that is at the front of the battery on the battery tray. With that tab removed and the cables loose, it's very easy to lift up the battery and remove it from the car.
