I'm old school and admit to missing the sound of an unsilensed air filter on a 4 bl ! I love the Fuel Injection but miss the sound any advice? I am totally stock at this point!
Any open filter element ("cold air intake") is going to produce intake noises as the element is not enclosed in the box. Even hacking the stock box some will yield the same effect. Ultimately you'll hear intake sounds regardless of what type product you go with. Will it sound like what you're going for? No. It's more like a swoosh than a wooooooosh (worst description ever).

...wish I could go back to that sound also but I recently put on a Blackwing air filter and a set of Z06 Titanium exhausts and I can hear a little more of the sound from the intake area and not be drowned out by the blah blah blah of the exhaust...I guess I can also hear it more because of the MCM S/C hood I put on...through the heat extractor opening on top...
Cut a hole in the firewall and have the air pulled from the cab, you will then hear that old 4b sound. Found this out by accident. I am also a Jeep guy and hate those stupid snorkels. Real off road guys do not use them as they bash into rocks and trees and get destroyed very quickly. So, some reroute the air supply to the cab, to cut down on dust and to avoid pulling in water. After this, the Jeep sounds like it has a 4b.
I am a bit old school as well and also miss this and the sound of a carbed solid lifter BBC, now that cannot be replicated.
If you like intake noise (and I do, I mean I really do, fliptop air cleaners on Buick big blocks) this is about as good as it gets. Yes, i know it's sucking hot air and there is most likely no horsepower gain, but the giant vacuum cleaner sound and the deep bassy Vooooom when you feed in just a bit of throttle around town, gets me wet.
Funny just the other day I was remembering how I flipped the air cleaner on my 74 Monte Carlo. It had a 400 engine but it was still a dog in comparison to my 68 Camaro putting out 500 horse.

Hi Jim,
Do recall who makes that intake and where you go it? Thanks!
Ah......nothing would howl like a GM big block and a Quadrajet !!
I have the two-element unit like those pictured and it does have a distinct howl, "similar" to the old carb sound.
Good luck
I have a 396 big block chevy with a q-jet, in my 1965 C10 pickup, never really noticed any sound, maybe because it's already at high rpm with the TH400 and 3.73 rear gears?Do you need a quite exhaust to hear it? Maybe my exhaust is too loud...

Flip the lid on Your air filter Then go for a ride!
