You still need to SCUFF the old paint. I would use a scotch brite pad and go over all the painted surfaces and then apply the new paint.

Yep, that's the plan. The calipers will be off the car while I install SS brake flex lines. Lets hope the Scotch pad does the trick. How much scuffing is required?
+1 What Bill C said. Need to scuff em up a bit and scotchbrite pad is definitely the easiest. Takes all of 5 min. per side for peace of mind and better adhesion, but make sure you clean em up after. Also, whatever paint you decide to use, check the color for sure. there are exhaustive threads on which brands are closest to torch red (if that's the color you are looking for), as some are a bit too dark for some people's liking (I won't name the brands that some people call "too dark" as I don't want to offend anyone. Google is your friend here ) I can only vouch for the duplicolor and its a good match IMHO-not too dark and not too orange.
ps-don't be scared to take off the calipers for a better job. 2 bolts. done. when you get everything cleaned up, the only deal is you will need to compress the pisons back in a bit so they will fit back over your pads. Just a c clamp...easy cheesy. blue locktite your caliper bolts, regrease pads and pins and torque em to 23. done deal Take your time and have fun!

I bought the Duplicolor brush applied kit. Also bought a ceramic clear coat rattle can. After I remove the paint from the lettering, I will go over the calipers with the clear coat. Also, planing to paint the unpainted caliper mounting bracket. I say one example where a guy painted his. I liked it and chose to try it on my car.
Here is the example I referenced. I am doing mine in red:
also, don't be cheap, the high temp enamels only make the project cost an extra $20-30. and since its an enamel it'll last forever and almost never chip or wear after it cures. Ask me how I know. haha. I've taken the cheap route and needed to touch up all the time, never needed to with an enamel.

So, are you NOT recommending those caliper paint kits from Dupli-Color and others. Or are you recommending Engine enamels?
Not that I know of, Im not 100% sure how to even post pics on here without going through photo bucket, which is a bit of a pain so I don't do it much.

You cannot link photos with Photobucket anymore, unless you pay for an upgraded account. That sucks, I use to love Photobucket. Not so much anymore. Just click the insert image icon: , wait for the image upload screen, and drag the desired photo from your computer onto the upload screen, wait for the upload process to complete, and click "insert". DONE! You don't need photobucket, Google Photos, or similar service to get your images into your posts.

Oh no those kits are great, I mean don't use standard spray paint or body paint. Any type of high temp enamel will work great, but after my experience with the engine stuff ill never go back. HUGE color selection, and it laid down super easy and looks amazing.

Unless your planning to track your car you don't really need to use high temp paint. I brush painted the calipers on my 99 with Rust-Oleum 7762830 Gloss Sunrise Red and it lasted for over a decade and 70k miles with occasional touch-ups. I didn't even remove the calipers, painted them while mounted. The 99 was Torch Red and the Sunrise Red matched very well on the calipers.
When I sold my 99 after buying and bought my 03 50th Anniversary I used Rust-Oleum 7768830 Gloss Burgundy on my calipers and again the color match was plenty close for calipers. Neither ever bubbled or flaked off in thousands of normal driving miles.
have same 50th. been thinking of doing same. OEM as of now. can you post close up pics of wheel and whole car to give me idea. was going to go red. thanks much, fin
