Default Oil Filter PF44? Help!!

My baby's got 1000.6 miles and I'm going out to the garage in a few minutes to give that puppy her FIRST OIL CHANGE.

Handy Dandy Auto didn't have a UPF44 so I got the PF44.
They did have a K&N Oil filter so I bought that also.

Which one of these would you guys use?
I hope it's not "none".

The K&N would be a step up from the PF model for sure, comparable to the UPF and Mobil 1 brands.

Use the K&N and dont worry about it. Get some UPF44s in advance next time. Speaking of oil changes....guess what tomorrows project is :D

Hey Guys I just got my brand new 2002 Z06 3 weeks ago, Torch Red with Black int. i only have put 400 miles on it and i see alot of you changing the oil around a 1000 miles. Is this what i should do? I know they dont put break in oil in cars anymore, but is it alright to leave the factory oil in up to 2 to 3 thousand miles? Just wanting to keep up this car as i do my 87GN. so any imput would be nice. Thanks for the Board..

You got a good choice in colors there ;) . Not to many Red with mod red as you would expect to see here. Does anyone know what size filter wrench this uses. My brother picked up an "I" size wrench cause he said it fit the PF44. Is the UPF44 different because mine doesnt fit. Oh well i guess back to the store I go.

Unless you specify otherwise, your dealer will use a PF44. There's nothing wrong with using it.

That first oil change is the perfect opportunity to install a magnetic drain plug ... under $5 at your GM dealer.

I did that. First oil change was at 700 miles. Installed the magnetic drain plug & UPF44.

Yesterday’s oil change came with 3300 miles on the clock. I checked the oil level before I changed it and the car was only down about ½ a quart. Not bad for 2600 fairly hard miles. The 2600 miles included about 12 dragstrip passes, and another 20 or so 0-120 MPH WOT passes on a deserted road. There was very little material on the magnetic plug.

The Pf44 is a very good filter. The K&N and UPF are better. Keep in mind that with any of the three, you should change your filter at least every 5000 miles, even if you don't change the oil until 10,000 miles. The shop I go to recommends oil changes every 5000 mile or 5 months. For their customers that think that is overkill, they strongly recommend a 5000 mile filter change and oil top off. MSI says that the filters are so compact and do such a great job filtering the dirt, that they simply cant hold the amount of dirt as a larger filter.
The next thing you might ask is why not use a larger filter with the same size base? Well, the problem is that they hang below the oil pan and cross member and could hit the ground. Than you would have a really big oiling problem. :smash:

There was a link some time back to a fairly extensive (and independent) analysis of most every filter out there. I agree with your comments on the PF vs UPF and other higher micron density filters. The UPF, Mobil 1 and K&N trap significantly smaller particles than the stock filter and the equiv. in other brands. Also the study looked at the construction of the filter and the potential for blow-by, or the mixing of unfiltered oil into filtered oil. From memory the Mobil 1 rated first, followed closely by the UPF and K&N brands. If someone has the link it might be worth posting, if not and there is interest I will dig it out :)

The Mobile1 filters are available at AutoZone. Always easy to find...

M107 is the number for the LS1/LS6, if I remember correctly. :flag

I use UPF-44, but Mobil and K&N are great filters too.

The K&N has a "nut" on bottom, very easy to take off, especially if you torque to shop manual specifications. I'm not sure why they specify so much torque (it's almost 2 full turns after contact) for a vette! Guess they don't want it coming loose, unless it has to do with greater expansion of aluminum with heat.

I also agree that stock PF44 oil filter is good enough.
