So I went to do my first full detail on the new vette and noticed this beautiful door crush. Don't know if we or the previous owner did it, but was wondering if I could get some advice on repair solutions. It is 0.25" wide and 1.25" tall. Is this doable with simply reinforcing with some fiberglass resin? Not looking for perfection, but decent repair that will prevent to crushed SMC from falling off. I'm assuming just a sand and some local touch up paint as the area is small. If I'm way off or this definitely won't work, would appreciate some direction.
I see a TON of Vettes like that. Believe it or not, I fixed mine with JB weld and had it spot painted. There is a guy in my town that does work for car dealerships painting bumpers and doing spot painting.
You'll want to use a proper SMC filler, not just regular fiberglass. There are products sold specifically for SMC repair. The door itself has a skin glued to the larger shell (the actual structural portion) and the skin is what appears to be damaged.
Per above it does tend to be a relatively common occurrence though - the doors are fairly wide and relatively fragile. I actually have a very small crush spot on the lower portion of my passenger door. I've not bothered with it as it's completely unnoticeable unless you're looking directly under the car.
