I had a similar experience loosing parents and also did a solo cross country trip immediately following mon's funeral. My trip started in a Mercury Grand Marquis that I purchased brand new for my parents when dad turned 80. My family said "you bought it , get rid of it". After driving it from NY to Los Angeles I stopped by my winter home in Florida on the return trip. Less than a mile from home I traded the Merc on an 02 vert M6 about six years ago. Enjoy the trip. Although I made a few stops to see friends having some alone time was good for me back then.
