I just purchased a C6 shifter from a forum member for my '01 Z06 to try out on the track. I'm a nube, explain the lower box?
The tranny in my 'vette I suspect is tired and needs overhauling. Reverse is often a bear to get to, except when driving - trying to get to 5th gear...
Why is the shifter upgrade so significant? What should I expect?

the stock box has very weak bushings and are prone to wear out, the lower box for the MGW is state of the art with extremely good bushings and the box is machined out of aircraft quality aluminum. Any movement in the shift linkage will effect the trans going into desired gear. pic of MGW (it is a work of art) !!!!
the ONLY ONE with the lower box, which is EVERYTHING !!!MGW !!!!!!
I guess you don't know about this option yet. A vendor here completely upgrades your lower box for $125 shipped with needle bearings and a CNC'd cap. Great option especially if you already have an aftermarket shifter like I do.

Just had Todd rebuild my lower box. The thing is a work of art, and significantly tighter than it was when I sent it to him. Weather is still garbage in Michigan, but driving impressions should be coming next week.
I think a lot of people overlook the lower box (partially due to lack of rebuild options) and just replace the shifter and end up with mediocre results. I'm starting with the bottom box and my stock shifter and going from there. My stock shifter has zero play in it, so I know it's not contributing to inaccuracy (longer throws, though).

Looks just as good on the mantle.
Which of these will work with the stock shifter ****?
MGW provides the proper C5 thread with the shifter. Choose 9/16 - 18 at time of purchase.

nice option but, 125 plus what you pay for a different shifter, most likely more than the MGW ??? Hinsen is like 410 dollars ???
Had stock shifter in my 02, liked it.
Had a B&M ripper shifter in my 98, hated it.
Put in a C6 Z06 shifter in my 98, liked it.
Have a B&M shifter in my 99, like it.
Put a MGW shifter with a innovativcar-tech.de **** in my 02, love it.
If anyone has experienced Barton shifters in other cars I just wanted to tell you guys that MGW is the only company that is comparable. Not sure I would put any other shifter brand up there with those two.
I have a C6 shifter and couldn't be happier. I tried Hinson (waaaay to short and tight) and an MGW. C6 was enough for me. I dropped it in my stock C5 shift box, no issues here.

That’s the route I took, but I went with the C6 TPS 427 shifter. I DO plan on having the lower shifter box rebuilt like ~Josh and DetroitPlac mentioned above though.
