I purchased a 98 coupe with Z06 wheels. My TPMS sensors have finally died. I want to purchase new sensors but I’m not sure if I should buy sensors to fit a 98 wheels or z06 (2001-2004) wheels? Are the sensors compatible between the two? There is a cost difference between the two. Can anyone shed some light on this?
It's not the wheels so much as the car/computer/receiver itself. You need TPMS's for the '98-2000 years, the 2001 and later ones are not compatible with your car, unless you want to switch out and upgrade the whole system.
Tons of threads on this in the past. The search tool and Google work fantastic for such.
In short:
1997-2000 replacement sensors are 1) finicky and 2) expensive
2001-2004 sensors are 1) cheaper and 2) more reliable
BUT, you will need to upgrade the RECEIVER unit in your car to use the new sensors. All of this can be done fairly easily, and for roughly the same price or cheaper than replacing the old sensors.
Contact Gene at Cultrag (advertiser); as they sell a kit for this.
......ZO6's wheels never had TPMS in them. (not that they can't be added)
If you do replace your sensors go with units made by Schrader. They made the OEM units for GM. The early year sensors are not that expensive, about $65 each.

97-00 sensors are just a reliable as later year sensors and they are no longer that much more expensive. Schrader sensors for a 97-00 are $63 and for a 01-04 are $41. For something that will last 10 years the extra $90 is nothing. Yes the early key fobs are about $50 more than the later year ones but the cost still does not justify switching over to later year TMPS sensors and fobs.
