I would think the grounding thing would apply to all year model C5s...

Agreed. I've been researching the forum about cleaning all the ground connections. There's a wealth of information on how to do this. This will be one of the first maintenance items that I take care of.

I've decided to make the purchase. I'll post some pics on this thread when I get it home in 2 days.

Thank you to all who replied.

Congratulations on your decision to purchase. I purchased a 1999 exactly a year ago this month. It is a black with firethorne interior and only had 38k miles on it. I made the purchase completely ignorant of the EBCM dilemma. So far this has been my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned, it’s fun to dive, and there’s always something to do with it. Since Having it I have done several performance mods, long tube headers, cam install, and supporting mods here and there.

After learning of the EBCM issue it is a little worrying, but thinking back to how much fun my 1999 has given me in the past year, I do not regret it, and I would do it all over again knowing what I know now.

The way I see it, if I get the EBCM failure one day, I’ll try to locate a working part from a donor car. But worse case scenario, I do not have ABS and deal with an annoying light on the dash (I don’t have active handling, so one less thing to worry about with an EBCM failure).

I hope you enjoy your C5.

I recall a gentleman who donated his 97 corvette to the corvette museum in bowling green awhile back , the clock showed ' 773,ooo ' miles. .he stated that the only major problem had been to pull the head.for a repair. Anyone reading this have seven hundred, seventy -three thousand miles on their vet ?

This guy C5 Corvettes.

When I bought mine I had a weird on and off issue with my cruise control, headlight switch, and twilight sentinel. Cleaned 2 ground points and all the issues went away. Almost wasted 150 bucks on a new multifunction switch.

I'm just 715,000 miles shy of that. It's my daily driver. My goal is to at least hit 300k at some point.

I went through this same delimia my self with a 97. Great looking car..but after reading about what may or may not be a problem. I decided not to spend my money with the potential of a problem that there is no easy fix. I bought a 01 last week

Also, things like the A/C compressor and HB seem to be far more common failures on C5s, and that's with all year models...

Should the EBCM issue influence a 1999 purchase? That is the question, and here's my answer. Depends on the person buying it, and the overall condition of the car. If that issue arising is such a major concern to the buying individual, then I would walk away from it. That's ONE issue out of how many potential that could possibly arise and that includes '01-'04 models as well. Some of us didn't have the luxury of knowing the EBCM on the earlier models would be such an issue, when we bought our cars when the C5 was still in production. However, this many years later, my 2000 still has all it's functions with the (potential) that the EBCM could fail among other many potential failures. If I was in the market to acquire another C5, I certainly wouldn't overlook the earlier ones. When or if the EBCM issue arises, then I'll do what's necessary to get it fixed and move on, just like so many others faced with the same problem. It's great that the '01-'04 has improved electronic equipment but, the '97-'00 models are damn good cars too....Just my .02

Next day the car had a dead battery. Replaced it with a new one. DTC codes all showed old history matching dealership work done years ago. No current codes. No one deleted the old codes, so I wrote every one down, then cleared the history.

Air conditioning blows cold.

It needs the front 3 piece air dam replaced, and the glove box bracket. Also all of the end links are dry rotted and will be replaced shortly with Moogs.

I threw a bottle of Techron in it before gassing it up and let the wife drive it for awhile so that I could listen for any noises. (That's how I discovered the worn end links).

I'm pretty happy with my purchase. The car appears original and well taken care of. I'll change some of the rubber hoses, flush and refill the coolant, change the oil and filter, and maybe have the trans and diff fluids changed.

When I bought my 2000 a couple of years ago, I just kept in mind that I should budget a couple of thousand dollars to take care of the ecbm if the issue arises. I figure, if it happens, if, $2000 will fix it whether I decided to buy a replacement, or convert to the later ecbm.

Default Is a ‘97 less prone to EBCM failure?

I own a ‘97 C5 with 132,000 miles on it and was talking about EBCM failure to the guy who maintains it for me. He said my car had the EBCM located in the back of the car away from engine heat. It was moved to under the hood for ‘98 on. He has replaced many ‘98 and newer EBCMs over the years but never on a ‘97.

The ECBM would not deter me from a good buy. In fact, I've owned a 98, no problems with ECBM and it had over 100K miles when I sold it. Then I purchased a 99 with just about 100K miles and no problems with ECBM. If another good deal on a C5 came my way, it too would be mine. I just love the C5 (owned 4)
