The automatic transmission linkage on my 2003 Anniversary will not shift gears. This happened to me once before on a prior C-5 as the linkage connector snapped. Apparently this has also happened to my 03. In order to get to the linkage, I have to remove the console and the gear shift ****. I have the 3 volume repair manuals and have removed all of the retaining screws on the console. I am now trying to remove the gear shift ****. I have pried out the push button and retaining clip. Next, the manual says that the **** can simply be unscrewed - however, I cannot get it to budge. I have applied sufficient twisting pressure, but it will not unscrew. Does anyone know what I am missing or is the **** that tight? Thanks for any thoughts.

The auto **** doesn't have threads...if I remember correctly there is a retainer clip in the front of the **** that has to be removed and it lifts off. Good luck.

I don's see any retaining clip other than the clip inside the push button
Here's a picture, although rather blurry. I'll get a different one if you need it. The clip is on the front side of the **** at towards the bottom. You can use a small screwdriver or scribe or any pointy object to pull it out. It's a U shaped clip.
