Default Steering Rack Bushing Replacement.

Had my car in for 4 wheel alignment and when it was ready the guy calls me, tells me its done and oh by the way the rack bushing is worn and you have rack movement.
I haven't had it up in the air yet here at home so i dunno if i should believe this guy or not. Oh, had my wife's Subaru to same shop for tires and an alignment and again, he calls to say it needs rear pads, they are worn to the backing plate. Shot the guy a line of BS and told him, yeah i know, I have plans on replacing them. Pulled the 4 wheels on her Subaru yesterday and at least 3/4" of material was on each pad. So much for "down to the backing plate" I replaced them anyway with Ceramic pad because the wife was complaining of the squeak of the semi-metallic pads. Ok, back to my car, how can I check the so called worn bushing ? Have someone turn the wheel lock to lock while i look for movement underneath ? Put a pry bar between the rack and cradle and see if I get up and down movement ?

That's what I'd do. Honestly that bushing shouldn't wear very fast. How many miles? Replacing is relatively easy.

I think I would find a new shop, especially if they can't even tell the truth about the rear pads on the on the wife's car...

I got 68,333 on the clock. Yeah I watched a couple of Youtube vids this morning and it seems relatively easy to replace.

The shop is one of those Tire Chain stores here in New Jersey. Used to be STS Tire, now owned by Mavis Tire. Same as Firestone and Goodyear shops. I only used them for Tire and Alignment work and they are about 4 blocks from my house so it's easy to drop off and walk home.
We got a very honest and reputable shop for all other repairs that I can't do at home.

I'd doubt that. My 90K mile bushing was in great shape. I replaced mine with a DRM delrin bushing as a nice little upgrade while doing a thermostat. Feel was improved slightly, but nothing mind blowing.

Sometimes mileage has nothing to do with it.

Just had my steering rack replaced today at 65000 miles. I was getting heavy steering at low speeds when turning right.

My Rack is fine..It's the bushing that was in question.

YES, it sure is!!! Now back on topic....I replaced the rack bushing in my car, back when I installed an ATI harmonic balancer. Since I had to pull the rack anyway, I figured I'd do it. It's Moog K6349.

Like I stated before, I'll check it out and if needed I'll replace. If not I have plans on replacing the harmonic balancer in the fall when the weather cools down a bit and while I got the rack out I'll replace the bushing.
