I did mine a few weeks ago and used two washers since shifts were what I considered very notchy. The improvement was significant. I also have a C6Z shifter and a shifter box rebuilt by TMODCustoms. Shifts are very smooth now and I have no trouble finding any gear whereas before sometimes I had to search for first and reverse.

2 months ago I had my go to Vette Mechanic put in a MGW shifter in my M6. I love the short shift mod but it has what others have said, it is very notchy. So I read the reviews on doing the washer mod. But I could not find any explanation how/why it works. Why does this washer mod work?

You're effectively changing the horizontal bias force, alleviating it of the work it has to perform. Stock it's spring-loaded, and by shimming it you're alleviating some of that force, making shifts easier. It's not recommended you go too far out however - hence no more than two washers - as you'll completely reduce the function of the force being applied.
MGW shifter with 1 washer. Even with a short throw shifter the effort to shift is less than the factory shifter. I think the washers are 1.25mm thick, so 2 puts you at 2.5mm, or I've also seen some aluminum versions that were 2.3mm thick each. Less effort is great, but I also don't want it to randomly pop out of gear which some owners have reported.
