Default End of the Road

I was headed home after work Wednesday night, when someone kindly dropped this in the middle of the road for me....

I guess you already know what happened next.....

I am pretty sure it's a total loss.

If they don't total it, make sure OEM parts are used.

Wow that could have ended much worse. Glad you're alright. That really sucks. Hope it's repairable.

What is it you hit? Did you hit it with the tire or the lower control arm? Why would a control arm and a fender total the car?

Not sure what it was that you hit, but unless there is more damage than shown in the pics, I wouldn’t think the car would be a total loss. Anyways, sorry this happened to you and best wishes for a positive outcome.

i love vettes but wow it doesnt say much for these cars that a tow strap would cause enough damage to total it. I've hit wheels in the road with no more damage than a bent rim in my other cars.

Really glad you're ok, that could have went a lot worse. Here's to hoping its either fixable OR that the insurance pays out enough to get you well on your way to another. Best of luck, sir!

Thanks to everyone for there show of support!

At first I was in denial. Then I spent a few days seriously depressed. I waited more than 40 years to get my Vette, I owned it for one month shy of three years, and then it was gone in an instant. Eventually, I got over it and am looking forward to the next one.

As far as the damage goes, that buckle is bigger than it looks. It is 8 to 10 inches across and weighs about 20 pounds. I hit it square with the left tire. I guess it shoved the wheel hard into the back of the wheel well. It broke both the inner fender and outer fender. I was told by a tech at the Vette shop that even the firewall got cracked. In the suspension the spindle and control arms were broken at a minimum. Also, some wires got cut somewhere, because power is no longer getting to the dash.

The reason it's an automatic total is because the car is a '98 with 176,000 miles on it.

Funny thing is, there wasn't a white knuckle moment at any point. It sure made a loud bang, but the car never got unsettled. It just tracked straight on through.

That is a reference to scale I did not catch in the photo. Makes a serious difference.
