How boring is a GEEZER auto compared to a stick....
#181
I read this thread and find it amusing because the original premise is not correct. There's nothing "geezer" about an auto transmission vette. Not only are the C7s selling way more autos than manual, talk to any used car dealer that sells a lot of Corvettes. C5 manual tranny cars no longer command a premium. I went looking for a friend on Autotrader and noted there was no difference between the price of a manual and an automatic transmission. Mileage, Carfax, northern vs southern existance, options, you name it, all drove the price up or down. I just could not find the $1K difference that existed only 7 years ago when I bought my used C5 and manual trannys were more desirable. IMHO, it's due to younger buyers not knowing how to drive stick, and, more important, they have no interest in learning. So if anything, it's the manual that's a "geezer" car, not the auto.
As for the OP, buy the one you want. I went from an auto C5 to a manual C7 and glad I did. I did find the auto to be less fun (I didn't say boring) than the manual. But then, I AM a "geezer".

By the way what you say about C5's with auto bringing as much as stick that is simply not true at all.

spank?... could I see the numbers that back up this spank comment. To me “spank” is what my sc’d C5 does to a stock one, (race is over in 3 seconds) but a few tenths of a second after a quarter mile is not a spanking. JMHO

Here are some numbers linked below showing 0-60 Corvette times. You can click on the little "I" to see the transmission type where indicated. There are 2 2001 automatics on the list, a convertible and a coupe (both ran 0-60 in 4.4 seconds) and a 2001 Z06, on the list. The Z06 is manual of course (it ran 0-60 in 4.5 seconds). Obviously there could have been a ton of variables in the testing conditions and this is not meant to be a dig against the Z06; however its fairly clear that the '01 cars ran 0-60 neck and neck irrespective of the transmission (and all manuals in '01 had more torque, 375 @ 4,400 rpm than their automatic counterparts, 360 @ 4,000 rpm). The '02 Z06 is another matter- that car, stock would likely outrun any previous C5 (stock).

It's so pleasant to " watch From the sidelines"... what was I thinking for the last 18 years?

Drifting
To put it bluntly, IMO & the opinion of many others, an automatic has no place in a vette....at least a traditional torque converter type. As much as people sometimes like to mod them as such - the vette is a SPORTS car, not a muscle car, not a GT car. As much fun as a stalled automatic V8 RWD car can be, IMO that's for camaros, Chevy SS, charger, challenger, G8, trucks, etc.
While the vette is probably the best RWD platform out there for mitigating parasitic power loss through the drivetrain, getting a manual REALLY hammers that point home - an M6 vette may only lose 10-13% by the time the HP hits the pavement, auto cars the loss is def higher, in some cases MUCH higher (not necessarily so w/ vette) - I want to get as much of the HP I paid for as possible.
I wouldn't even consider owning/buying/driving an auto vette - 0% interest in one.
Hope that answers your question.
On the other hand had a stalled/bolted G8 GT & GTO - the A4 GTO was like a Lincoln Mark VIII on steroids & the stall made it stupid fun - & the G8 was a beast in general.

I prefer manual in a sports car. More fun, that's why it's called a sports car. My family car is an auto, even though the model is available with a manual.
