There's no simple answer, but if you go to one of the tire manufacturer's web sites, they have charts showing which tire sizes fit which rim widths. BTW, if you want to stick with run flats they are only made in a limited number of sizes.
If you are not changing your wheels, this is all about looks, not performance.
I'm sure this has been asked a lot, so please bear with me if I ask again since I can't seem to find an answer.
I want to keep my stock wheels, but would like to go up a tire size and still maintain the same overall diameter.
Can my stock rims accommodate a 285/35 wheel on the rear and a 255/40 on the front, or am I better off just sticking with the stock sizes?
Thanks in advance.
Rough numbers...
To keep the same OD, you can drop one aspect ratio with 3 width bumps. Example; 275-40-18 to 305-35-18 (40 to 35, 305 past 285 to 305). Thus the Z having 295-35-18 which gets fairly close to the base.
The actual numbers:
275-40-18 = 26.66
285-35-18 = 25.85
295-35-18 = 26.13
305-35-18 = 26.41
