Default Jacking Puck

Is it necessary to use Jacking Pucks to jack up a C5, if so, rubber or metal.

You should, I do, but not necessary. Just be damn sure you dont do any damage to your rocker panels

I use double stacked hockey pucks with an eye bolt that I made when I bought the car. I just used them today doing an oil change & power steering flush.

If you look or feel underneath the rocker panels where the jacking points are, you will find an opening in the plastic panel exposing the frame, and that has a short horizontal slot in it. That spot is where the lifting jack (either a floor jack or a garage mechanical or hydraulic lift) should be applied, so that the weight of the car is borne by the frame, not the rocker panel. It's just the right size for a hockey puck, hard rubber or metal, or even wood, doesn't matter. Many jacks have a pad that is larger in diameter than that opening, so you need a puck of some kind to get to the frame. If you crack the rocker panel, you are looking at a VERY EXPENSIVE repair as it's glued on to the frame and not easily replaced. That horizontal slot is used by the puck to put something in there, either an eyebolt from a homemade puck or the T-handle of a commercially available one, to rotate 90* inside the slot to hold the puck in place, very handy.
Get and use the pucks, much cheaper than fixing body damage. And don't let any garage or service station not familiar with C5s lift your car without using them.

You should always use jacking pucks when lifting from the frame contact locations if you don't have frame rail protection:

To prevent any possible damage to the rocker panels, yes, you should use jacking pucks. I used BMW jacking pucks on my car, but many vendors sells pucks made from aluminum, rubber, plastic or you can just make your own using an eyebolt and hockey puck.

This poor individual from a C5 Group on Facebook posted this a couple of days ago. He went to Discount Tire and this happened. I NEVER attempt to lift my car without pucks installed.

Default Jacking pucks

Jacking pucks are the safest way to jack up your C5 but you can do without the pucks but you have to be sure that the jack does not touch any part of the rocker panels or the fenders. When my Vette was almost new the dealer cracked the bottom of my front fender doing an oil change.Lucky for me that I checked underneath the car before I leaft the dealership. I made the dealership sign off that they were responsible for the damage and they repaired it.I would highly suggest that you get the pucks and bring them with you when you bring your car for service. Most service people treat your Vette as just another car and don’t care that I spent well over $50000 dollars of my hard earned money and waited most of my life to get my Vette.

I've ran with the BMW pucks on my Z06/Z16 for over 12 years now. Can't tell they're even there. Picked them up locally at the BMW dealer.

I bought pucks but never use them. I use a low profile jack and a 2".x6".x26"...board under the cradles. Then put a jack stand under each end of the board...You can google a thread on here somewhere about how to do it. Rear is supper easy.

I use these too. Mine were a little loose so I put some 3M auto tape on the surface where the puck contacts the car. Solid as a rock now!

I try to stay away from any auto shop in general as much as I can lol, but if you must, I'd definitely make it a point to "remind" them of your car's special needs once or twice. I'd rather be a PITA and speak up than to have a damaged car and have them claim it wasn't them or something (which is what happens more often than not unfortunately).

OUCH!!! When I went in to Discount to have my tires installed, I called the manager out, installed the aluminum pucks while he watched, and made sure that he, and the installer knew to jack on the pucks ONLY. They opened the doors, hood and trunk while it was jacked up, not necessary on the C5's, but no harm doing it either. The $45 you pay for a set of the aluminum pucks are more than worth it.

A hockey puck and a eye bolt screw is all you need - for $5 in parts just make your own - it's not even a discussion as to what should be done...
