I was wondering if anyone else had been through a similar experience. Just got new set Michelin Pilot Sport tire’s installed on my 03 coupe the other day at Big O Tires. As I was leaving I thought it was a bit noisy but wrote it off as the tires had too much air pressure in them.
Well went about 1/2 block and hit the highway on ramp and just before 70 mph my see through targa roof jumped up about 6 inches in the air in front over my windshield. I s~#t for a moment because of all the air blowing in my car before I realized where it was coming from and why! I grasped the top on its side as I had the side windows down already and pulled to the side of the road. All that kept me from joining the FRC was the rear center latch had been engaged. BUT both front latches where in the unlocked position, with both visors in the up and stored lock. They denied any involvement but it was 30 degrees that morning when I dropped the C5 off and I damm sure didn’t ride in with the top off. As it was, the back center latch was on and help hold it on , but my paint was all scuffed where it had lifted and raised over the back lip on the stationary part. Has this happened to anyone else and was there a good reason to unlatch both the left and right front latches ? I never dreamed that I had to pull down BOTH SUN VISORS and check the roof after buying tires. Any thoughts? Bob
There is only one way those latches became loose. Someone unlatched them and of course the shop will denied any involvement.
I have never experienced, heard of or read where they come undone by themselves.
Half of the tire stores don’t know what the hell they are doing. When I had a new set of tires installed by a well-known tire dealer, they opened both doors, the hood and trunk and then jacked the car up by hand. I ran up as my passenger door nearly swung into a nearby machine and argued with the manager until they closed all of my doors. Manager said their policy was to do that on all Corvettes

Those latches hold tight and don’t just open by themselves. If I had to make a guess, one of the techs working on the car unlatched the top. I would be discussing it with the store owner as well as getting them to fix the damaged paint.
Some shops automatically think the roof will crack when they jack it up so they loosen the targa top. It happened to me last year except my mechanic is an upstanding guy and covered it. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...roof-club.html
