Default Deep tranny pan

So....i had a local mechanic drain the tranny and replace the gasket and filter. Apparently this car had a "deep" tranny pan and the normal filter is not long enough to fit. So the correct filter has a longer neck on it. And it is not commonly stocked. Took a day to get it from the local GM dealer. Anybody ever heard of this? Mechanic said this is a good thi g because extra fluid is better?

I have heard of this and also saw two types to purchase and you need to know what you have before ordering.
Yes it is a good thing to have.

Yes, the C5 Auto Trans filter is different than the other 4l60E filters in other cars of these years... So, a specific filter is required.
Not a big deal.. Most auto parts stores can get it same day. The stock pan is considered "deep".. but only by stock references.
I have installed a true deep pan in mine - I Have them in all my vehicles ( 2 trucks, MonteSS, & my C5)
The reason is that you get more Trans Fluid in the system.. It helps to dissipate heat.
If you have stock torque converter and just drive your car normally, there is not a real "need" for a deeper pan than the stock one.
Just make sure to service your trans (filter & fluid) Often.. And DON"T do the "flush" crap service !!

When a deep pan such as the finned aluminum B&M pan is installed on the C5 A4, an extension is supplied by B&M and other manufacturers so that the standard C5 filter works fine. Check the lower left of the diagram in the link below, one part is the extension and the other, the small ring, is the replacement seal which goes between the extension and the transmission.

The extension is separately available.

I put one like the link shows on my car because of several advantages- better cooling, more capacity and a drain plug which takes the mess out of a fluid and filter change.
