Got the first of who knows how many 'official' oil consumption logs done today -- 1 quart in 713 miles. This poll is for anyone who has been though this process. I'd like to know what you did / recommmend.
Re: Poll: '01 Z06 -- Ring replacement? -- ONLY '01s (eaZy06)
I had the rering done at 11k. The car had worsen to about 800 miles per qt after using a qt per 1000 to 1200 miles at the 5k odometer milestone. Enough was enough. Only had to drive 1000 miles for my oil consumption test. Job was done in 2-1/2 days with the block in the car last March. Job was perfectly and cleanly executed. Dealer had the upgrade rings in stock. I have 5500 miles after the rering. Oil consumption is now 1/2 qt per 4000 miles which should be considered ideal. If you are burning a qt per 1000 miles or less, by all means get it fixed so our '01s can lose the reputation of being oil burners. Your rering paperwork should enhance your resale value.
Re: Poll: '01 Z06 -- Ring replacement? -- ONLY '01s (eaZy06)
I called today to start the consumption testing. I know I've got the issue. I've heard too many good things about the re-ring that I'd be foolish not to get it done.

Thanks for this info! My dealer's telling me that I need to drive 3000 - 5000 miles. Isn't this suppose to be set by GM? Why is it different for every dealer?

Re: Poll: '01 Z06 -- Ring replacement? -- ONLY '01s (eaZy06)
I finally gave in on Monday and requested a ring replacement when I got 650 miles on the last quart. It has been monitored for about 4000 miles, with about 19,000 total miles. Once it is completed I will post the results. I don't even want to think about them tearing the engine apart, but this dealer has done 2 others recently, supposedly with good results. :mad

At 14K miles i finally gave in and had Napier rings installed at dealer. At 1st they wanted to do a 1000 mile check...the shop super then called me over after taking a look at my exhaust and Mobil-1 receipts and informed me that they would just go ahead and do the job...no "test."
....results??....too soon to tell...used to burn a quart every 450-600 miles..but now after 1,000 high-horsepower miles, seems to have used 1/4 quart....AND....it doesn't smell like an old smokin rambler when you finish a hard drive.

Did you have your pistons replaced also? What's a Napier ring? Is it better?
1st consumtion test -- 700 miles per quart. 2nd 418 miles per quart. The dealer says that the next time they are going to actually begin the process -- whatever that means.

Re: Poll: '01 Z06 -- Ring replacement? -- ONLY '01s (eaZy06)
they just did the rings on mine...best i can tell from the paperwork. Here's a link to a great Z06 article by Hib Halverson that includes the 2002 changes...including detail discussion of the piston slap and Napier ring issues:
Re: Poll: '01 Z06 -- Ring replacement? -- ONLY '01s (eaZy06)
Here's my story and I'm sticking to it :)
Went to the dealer and said I wanted the oil consumption test, explained that I was using 2-3 qts every 3000 miles between oil changes. Paid to have my oil changed and started the consumption test. At about 600 miles the check engine light came on, threw code P1416 H C and low oil level message came on. Went back to Dealer, they replaced a sensor for the code and replaced the Pan Valley Seal under warranty. Under the ?revised? TSB the first step now is to replace the Vallery Seal and then monitor the oil consumption again. Which is what I am doing now with only 50 miles on the new Valley Seal. If I continue to use oil at about the 1qt during the next 1000 miles then the dealer is going to go ahead and do the re-rings fix. There has been a lengthy discussion of this on the other web site with C4C5specialist noting the new procedure I'm undering going above. He also mentions mentions how many total re-rings he has done to date and which ones have had both the Valley Seal replacement and the rings and which ones have been fixed with only the Valley Seal.
Actually if you look at the numbers, it is something less than 1% of the '01s which have this problem or at least have looked into getting it fixed. This number may rise as more owners feel more confident in their dealer actually being able to resolve the oil consumption issue. (This statement is only based on the number of Z06 owners I found who have posted this problem on the websites or from mechanics who have posted the numbers they have fixed. Not very scientific and probably only as accurate as CNN) We'll see.
Re: Poll: '01 Z06 -- Ring replacement? -- ONLY '01s (MiZ06)
MiZ06, I hate to disagree with you but I feel fairly certain myself based upon '01 Z owners I have corresponded with plus forum polls addressing this subject is that the number of '01s burning a qt in 2000 miles or less is more like 20% to 30%. No chance that this is only 1% of the population of cars. I have been monitoring this subject for over a year and a half. I had the rering last March after I emotionally conceded that the problem was not going to go away on its own with mileage.

Consumption test started today. Service writer told me it starts with an oil change which I have to pay for ($75.) I said no it doesn't! :bs Spoke to service manager and he checked the oil himself and told me to come back when it needed a quart. He commented about the Hoosier "slalom" tires. I just told him the car has been around an autocross course maybe 15 times (true), so forget about that being the cause. I added the last thing I want is to have a factory assembled engine pulled apart at a dealership. He understood that.
