Last night I added a bottle of Techron concentrate to tank, it was about 1/4 tank, then filled up with Costco premium gas.
The day before driving in traffic I thought I heard pinging at low RPM/mild take offs (manual transmission) but not if I gave more throttle, it had been about a year since last adding techron.
It says to do it before oil change, DIC says oil change interval is 50 something percent.
Is it bad for oil, or is it using your oil change as a reminder of when to add a bottle?
You can use it at every oil change or even every 1k miles. It has no effect on the oil. Oil changes are an easy reminder to do other maintenance like tire rotations, cleaning MAF sensor, cleaning TB, adding injector cleaner, etc.
I add a bottle of Techron every other fill up. Pretty sure you won't over use the stuff. i have not had any problems at all in two years of ownership with my 03 vert.

I don’t know where you are located, but the Costco in my area has additives added at the pump. I run Costco fuel exclusively in my Vette and have not had a problem with the fuel system for a long time. Adding the Techron won’t hurt. But unless I have a problem I just run Costco fuel
I don't always run Costco gas, closest one is 30 minutes away, however there is one near my new job, which I've been driving the Corvette, but hope to get the free PT Cruiser I got from GF up and running, to keep Corvette for driving on my personal time.
Passed 3 wrecks since Monday, and people at parking lot I don't trust to not back into car or hit it with their door, but the PT I wouldn't worry about. Lol
I think it's not pinging, but clutch chatter I'm hearing, doing tons of take offs, get clutch let out, push clutch in hit brakes, to move 3 feet in rush hour traffic going to, and home.

I do not go by the DIC for this....I use Techron every 3rd fill up and Exxon gas which has techron in it...i also use Costco premium...good stuff....

If you haven't used it in a long time / bunch of miles what happens is the Techron loosens all the junk up in the engine and the oil washes it away. So before I add a bottle I check the oil color, I tend to drive hard during that bottle to help get more fuel movement. I'll check the oil color after and if it is visibly darker I know it needed it pretty bad and I'll usually do a second treatment before an oil change.
If you do it often enough it won't change the oil color because it doesn't clean a whole lot at once.

Every third tank for me, but I also use Chevron Supreme gas exclusively. No issues for me either.
How does Techron, a fuel additive, loosen stuff in the engine enough to change the oil color? That does not exactly make sense.
It's only the same stuff as you get in Chevron gas. I've found it makes zero difference - I use Costco gas which has a better additives package than most "premium" brands, so it's really not necessary.

.
...but what Techron does is to help dissolve the sulfur buildup on the fuel cards and that my friend is the major problem with the bad readings people are getting...go figure...
There is the concentrate and the lighter duty version. I used the concentrate a couple of times after I picked up the car. Then, Costco sells 6 packs of the lesser strength Techron for a ridiculously low price. I use that on average at every 2nd or 3rd fill up - it keeps the gas gauge functioning properly due to the sender being prone to contamination.
A mechanic friend of mine suggested filling the tank with a non ethanol gas and adding Lucas octane boost about every third tank in my 99. He says it will keep the 02 sensors operating properly. Have not tried it yet though.
Techron is good stuff. That being said, if you have a hot motor or hot tune, you will get some pinging. This is a fairly common issue that you can read about on other forums. My opinion, it drops the octane a little, enough that with an aggressive tune or hot motor, you will notice. If stock, doubt it will be an issue.
