You have to be really really careful when you reassemble then or you can get all kinds of wacky things happening. If that gasket isn't in place correctly and it has even the slightest crease in it, you can forget that fob working. Especially so if it's the older style with the passive switch.

That's what mine was. Assemble that rubber membrane into the fob as carefully as you can, then assemble the two halves. If you look closely at what's happening when you snap it shut, I think you'll see the problem and be able to avoid it. The Membrane in mine always came off with one side, but it needed assembled with the other side to make the buttons work correctly. The tolerances on those spacings is nil, it's got to be right.
There is a Chevy dealer that sells on Amazon that sells the factory replacement key fob for 1997-2000 cars that eliminates the passive feature. GOOD RIDDANCE!
Mine has been working great. Well worth the 70 bucks or so.
If you can find a new one for $70 buy it! They sell mostly for $80-90. These is a know issue with bad solder joints on the circuit board of the fob. Often reflowing the solder joints in a couple of key areas fixes a dead fob. I was able to fix my 99 fob this way. Do a search for more info on this.

Thanks for making check my work. It was in fact 85 dollars. Still worth every penny.
The problem with mine wasn't that it wouldn't work per say, it was the passive feature that was just out of it's mind and it would not respond to being turned off.

That's caused by incorrect re-assembly as I said above.
