I’m looking for recommendations for new/better speakers to replace the OEM Bose.

I went with Infinity Reference 6522ex for the rear speakers in my hatchback and powered by my Pioneer Avic-8400 They are a 3 ohm speaker and close to what GCG recommended if you are keeping the Bose wiring. They sound great, even my son was thoroughly impressed and he has a $2,600 system in his C4. I read everything I could find about the JBL speakers and most reviews complained about them sounding too tinny and the lacking base. I'll be replacing the 3" tweeter in the front doors next. Btw, the 6522ex have been replaced with 6532ex but I couldn't justify the extra $25.

Can you apply your same expertise to the C6 base system? I'm going to follow you on my C5Z, but my gf LOVES her C6 and wants a bit of a sound upgrade. I'm lost though....turbo's, HPTuner, nitrous, engine builds...I'm good...speakers and audio...lost...lol

I read that also but disagree. The difference may be those speakers were installed with no deadening or insulation improvements made to the rear boxes or door panels. I enjoy banging my head as much as anyone, and my stock Bose system with the combination of JBL speakers and Noico sound deadening clearly sounds better now ... improved bass and very nice treble. For just $100 in new speaker cost and the time spent properly insulating I think it’s worth trying the JBL’s for an affordable fix.

Here is what I did to upgrade my audio (retained stock HU):
  • Kenwood XR700/5 channel amp
  • Helix B62C component speakers for the doors
  • Kicker coax rear speakers
  • Kenwood 10" sub in stealth sub box

I'm not familiar with the C6 platform, but if you give me details of its OEM system I can try to help you kick it up a couple of notches in the audio department, and I'm sure your girlfriend will like the results

All the feedback I've read from people that correctly installed them have been positive, as the comments from run1fsr just above and the independent review contained in the link I gave the OP in Post 3 above.

Most probably those complaints are the result of incorrectly installing the new speakers. As I keep on telling everyone that's considering this kind of project, due to Bose not following the same standard in their speaker terminals than most/all other manufacturers (in fact, it's the opposite), it's quite easy to end up with speakers in opposite phase.

The new speakers must be in phase with each other, and more importantly, in phase with the door subwoofers, Otherwise, there will be sound cancellation, resulting in tinny sound and lack of presence.

By using the metra wiring harness, it's almost impossible to connect the rear speakers incorrectly. I didn't do any sound insulation and the Infinity speakers for $59 have plenty of bass and crisp highs.

I think a big problem with the JBL reviews may be that people are buying knockoffs. The speakers on JBL's website are $99, but you can find them all over for $49 and up. Even the ones sold on Amazon are made in Mexico, whereas, original JBL's are made in Vietnam.

Agreed, but not everyone use those adapters. Nevertheless, where this problem mainly occurs is with the front channel 3½" speakers because their OEM connectors are plain spade ones. People tend to just swap speakers using the OEM connections "as is", without realizing that this will result in inverted polarities.

Having the front speakers in opposite phase with the rest of the system is worst than having the rears wrong because the front ones sit right besides the subwoofers and this maximizes sound cancellation where it hurts most: the lower frequencies.
