My 2002 Z06 was rear ended by a BMW this weekend. Damage done was a cracked bumper and slighly bent exhaust pipe. I reported to my insurance, but haven't heard for the from the guy who hit me insureance company. Should I go through my insurance company and let them go after the bum! :smash:
My insurance company wants me to go to their shop, but I'm going to the dealer I bought my Z06 from since they have their own shop. I figure the dealer would do the best job.
Any Advice
I've had something like this happen in the past and this worked for me.
1. Take it to three shops for estimates in writing.
2. Fax copies of all three to your agent and his.
3. Request all parts are genuine GM and the paint is done by a GM or ASE certified paint tech.
4. Give it some time to work out but stay on top of it and be nice about it.
Sorry to hear about the accident. Some people just dont knwo how to drive.
I would let the insurance handle all the dirty work. You pay them, let them do you this service.
As for taking the car to the dealer for insurance work, well I have reservations about that. Not because they are the dealer they can fix your car better. There are alot of quality shops around So. Cali and it's up to you to go to a reputable one. After all, the bum's insurance will be paying. Besides, you have a black C5 so you wont have any problems with paint matching. I just luv black Z06s.
Good luck and keep us posted on its progress. See you at the museum if you get it fixed by then.
Thanks for the advice, since I haven't heard from his insurance company...I'll go with mine....a police accident report was done, so I have back-up on the accident. The guy was trying to blame me for slowing down before a dip. The officer fired back that 99.9% of the time, it's the person who rear ends someone fault. I'll get some quotes from differnet shops. My exhaust is slightly bent, so I'm going to ask for a new one. Don't want a shop trying to bent back in shape.
Let all of us in SoCal know how the repairs go. I haven't found a body shop worth a damn since I moved out here. It'd be nice to find one that does an acceptable job - my wife is hit about once a year in her car. It's never her fault but that's why she doesn't drive the Z06. :)
:mad I guess we need one of those reflective triangles. I was wacked this week too. The guy that hit me backed up and sped away and he didn't have a lisence plate. :cuss Uninsured motorist is picking up the tab and my insurance has been very supportive, letting me choose the shop and springing for new parts. My car has 2 broken 1/4's, broke BU lights, bent Borla, and a wacked fascia. If I find the fool :boxing
Hope our repairs turn out good. :seeya
An accident report was filed you said. Was the other person cited? If so I would call the other person's insurance company and let them take care of it. If you just go with your insurance they will count it against you and eventually your rates may go up.
I was recently in an accident in my truck. The other person was cited. I called the other person's insurance company the next day and had it taken care of. I never even let my insurance company know about it.
Just remember there are two parts to all insurance policies. Liabilty (for what you break) and contract (for your car when it's your fault). The other guy's liability policy is paying and the rules are different (legally). The insurance companies don't have much say in how the car is repaired under the liability part (they may not want to tell you this though). ie You did not enter into a contract with the other guys insurance company to fix your car. Whichever company you use, if they try to push aftermarket parts, rental limits, or specific shops on you, and you don't like their recommendations, casually ask about the difference between the two parts and I bet you'll get what you want.
The idea that a dealer is better at bodywork because they have their own shop isn't always true. It would be worth looking for some that specialize in vettes.

Matt
Matt,
I read that there's a pretty good corvette shop in Santa Barbara (actually I think it is closer to Summerland though), less than an hours drive from Van Nuys. Sorry, but I can't remember the name. I read about this place in a vette magazine, I think Corvette Fever, I'm not sure though. I spotted the place right off the 101 freeway to the right going North Bound. But very, very hard to see. Hope this helps.
Chris :)
<snip>... trying to blame me for slowing down before a dip. The officer fired back that 99.9% of the time, it's the person who rear ends someone fault. </snip>
Unless the person who is hit was operting the vehicle illegally, i.e. drunk etc, then the person who could not stop to avoid the accident is to blame.
Maybe if the beemer had installed Z06 brakes...:D
Best of luck getting the sauerkraut juice off of the rear of your Z06 -
I called the bimmer guy's insurance company and one of the office worker's said the jerk who hit me is blaming me....because I slowed down before a dip...he's claiming I stopped and I was drinking....... :mad I didn't stop and there was a police report taken....I told the officer the truth that I had two drinks....if I was drunk the officer would have arrested me... I don't drive drunk!!! :mad this officer worker gives me the claims person number on the case....I leave over three messages......no response.....like baseball...three strikes and your out....I'm going to have my insurance company go after them now! :mad
my company said that it wouldn't count against me since I was rear ended....funny thing is the office worker for the guys insurance company say's that 100% of the time, it's the person who rear ends someone's fault....I feel like I'm getting rear ended again!
