Measuring underhood clearance
Currently my air intake setup has some hoses and clamps that have cut through the underhood liner and into the hood. I made some recent changes - including cutting away a section of the radiator support "plastic surround" to allow the "snorkel" to sit lower. I'm also realizing that if I had situated the "flip-tied airbox" a bit lower on the fan shroud that it would have helped my cause.
Before investing in a new underhood liner I want to see what my clearance is. What have people used - a piece of packing foam? Play-dough?

I've used tinfoil a few times.

Play-dough and silly putty work fine as long as the engine compartment is cool.

I've used clay at work a few times and it works really well. Just make sure you have some sort of releasing agent on the side you don't want it to stick to.
