After two months of trying to live with the OEM head unit, I broke down and replaced it with an Alpine single DIN today (I can't live without USB and Bluetooth). Took me about 3 hours including a beer break. I also re-soldered the resistors on the HVAC unit so that I can finally see the LCDs. I thank my predecessors for posting instructions on how to do both of these things!
Stock setup. Half way done... Complete!

I installed the Alpine CDE-175BT. I left the rest of the system stock. I got everything I needed including adapters all pre-wired from Crutchfield (I hope it's ok to name vendors here). I've had Alpine systems before and I like the way they sound. I think it sounds a lot better than the stock system plus I like having 800 songs available on a USB stick instead of 13 on a CDROM which skips when I hit a bump. The Bluetooth connected up to my iPhone without any issues, too. I'm very happy!
Very nice job! Which Alpine model and how do you like it? Did you keep the rest of the Bose system intact? Dave
I installed the Alpine CDE-175BT and kept the rest of the system stock. I'm quite happy with the results, and I don't see any reason to replace the speakers at this time. The vendor provided all of the adapters I needed and prewired everything.
