Default Mayhem Build Thread

I figured I would start a build thread to get input and advice as much as anything while having it all in one location, if this should have been in the tech section please relocate. I am calling this car 'Mayhem', I call my 944 Turbo 'Crisis' and my 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster was known as 'Whiplash' in my hometown, it was my first car and I still have it, but it needs some TLC and is on the agenda for next summer. It is all in fun and I don't take any of it serious, no matter what you do there is always someone meaner or faster. We have a 9.2 second 1/4 mile Nissan GTR here in town that might be the top of the food chain in street legal daily drives, no illusions of taking that on.

Here is where I am at with my 1997 Sebring Silver Base Coupe:

Upgrades:
Blupunkt touchscreen navigation stereo
Vararam VRB2 Intake
Borla Z06 X pipe & Borla ATAK catback exhaust
Xeon headlights
StopTech DBA T3 4000 series slotted rotors and pads
C5 Z06 Brake Calipers
C7 Luk clutch
Tick Performance Adjustable Clutch Master Cylinder and remote bleeder (10K miles)
C6 Z06 Shocks / sway bars
Upgraded tunnel plate
The engine / transmission mounts are solid mounts
TMod precision short shifter.

New:
New Harmonic Balancer
Torque tube rebuild
Shifter box rebuild
Coolant Expansion Tank
Radiator with upper and lower hose
Seat bottom foam
Roof panel weather stripping left, right and rear
Front and rear wheel bearings
Fuel Injection pressure regulator
Fuel Injectors cleaned and tested.
Power steering pump
Z06 wheels

Items I am working on:
Pull Key and wait 10 seconds (have exhausted all but having the BCM? rebuilt I believe)
Water leak at door windows, weather stripping was replaced and tip in adjusted all the way
Shifter Rattle

Suspension/Chassis, brakes, clutch, etc. are all done and the car is ready for a serious engine build. The engine has 123,000 miles, but if it needs to be refreshed I can deal with that when the need arises.

Now it is time to build the motor, so I am acquiring parts for a winter build. I will be purchasing LT headers and a camshaft to go with the ported heads (215cc 300 cfm 63cc chamber 241s w/ BTR double springs and titanium retainers) I am obtaining to go with a LS6 intake with matching ported throttle body. I am looking for the appropriate cam to give me an aggressive lope and performance without needing new valve springs regularly. I live where there is no emissions testing so no requirements to worry about. To be honest power and aggressive choppy lope is more important than manners but the car is used for date night and road trips with my wife so it needs to be driveable, but I am not spending all this money for a sleeper.

Right now I am considering the following Camshaft: BTR LS1 LS2 Stage 3 Cam 231/242 .617"/.592" 112+2 and looking for input from those with more experience than I with the LSx engines. Some questions are what type of RWHP can I hope to get, do I need to upgrade fuel injectors and fuel pump and anything else? General things I may be overlooking?

I have talked to these guys about doing my tune once I am done, they are the closet tuner around and seemed nice and knowledgeable:

That car could stand a bit of lowering.

I love the exterior theme you got going with the black accents.
I didn't know Blupunkt still existed. They used to be a high quality product but the prices I just saw on a search they have gone WAAAAYYYYYY down.

Aesthetically it is a valid opinion and I will dwell on it. However, it is level and already hits curbs, sidewalks and steep driveways so there are valid arguments against.

Thanks for your input/suggestion, I will ponder it.

Previous Owner installed stereo but had wrong impedence speakers which I replaced. Stereo sounds way better via source other than windshield antenna. But yes Blaupunkt is cheap now. But exhaust system loud so haven't worried about stereo much. Working on the three nagging issues I have listed first.

I have black side mirrors for it two. I also have rebuild kits for seats.

Thanks buddy, may be a slow as I pick up components bargain shopping while trying to get the best combination. Just bought these heads:

"215cc heads, fresh valve job , BTR double springs and titanium retainers, Cut down to 63cc chamber, flows close to 300cfm@.600 lift."

Headers and cam are the last two major parts left, and I am watching for good deals on larger fuel injectors, etc..

Need to get the LS6 intake manifold ported and matched to the ported heads before doing a cam and header install. In the meantime I have installed a rebuilt BCM and HVAC Controller, Now I don't have the dreaded "Pull Key and Wait 10 Seconds" error all the time, such a great improvement. TMod shifter box and did the anti-venom shifting modifications. Rebuilt the passenger seat and will be doing the drivers side next.

I picked up black side rearview mirrors and a transparent top. The transparent top looks fantastic on the outside, but from inside when something dark is in view outside, you can see littl short scratches.

Played hooky with my wife one day and drove up from Yakima to Chinook Pass and then down and back up to White Pass, beatiful drive. Yakima, WA has allowed dragging the Yakima Ave second and third Saturday May thru September and last weekend was the frist one and it was a blast, lots of nice cars, trucks and motorcycles.

I wouldn't recommend that cam for a stock 5.7 motor. The power band is so hign, it outruns the airflow. I got great results (483/432 SAE DYNOJET) using a 228-232@112 Crane. This with EWP and home ported FAST 90. Comprletely streetable with no surging. BTW I'm down the street in Pasco.

Thank you for the input and sharing your experience. I actually will be installing heavily ported heads that are also milled so that the combustion chambers are 63cc. In addition I would be installing LT headers and I already have a Vararam intake. The LS6 intake manifold I have to install with it has a ported throttle body. So I figured if I had it ported to match the heads, I would be breathing fine for that cam. I had also talked with BTR and that is the cam they suggested.

It could very well be too much cam but it is a manual and I have talked to half a dozen people with that cam and only heard good stuff and some people saying go stage 4.

It could be that a milder cam would put down better numbers and have a more useable power band so I will take it under advisement.

Thanks again neighbor, we sometimes drive to Tri-Cities for a drive and dinner.

Bave everything besides LlT headers, lifters and timing chain. What is the current thoughts on goid lifters and timing chain these days?

I have read that Morels and Lunati are good lifters.

The build will be using a BTR Stage 3 cam, highly modified 241 heads, LS6 intake which I plan to have ported to match heads and a portrd and polished throttle body.

Have Mellings HP oil pump and Chromemoly pushrods, car has new stock harmonic damper and water pump already. I have a Racetronix fuel pump and 42# injectors as well.

Basically lifters and timing chain are last couple of items. Just curious what the experts would use?

Not really an update to the build, but thought the images my step son took of the cove lighting I added to the doors looked cool. This engine build has to wait until the Porsche is done and life has just been too busy hoping to be able to jump on that soon now that we are done with stepdaughters wedding, etc.. But always something like grandkids Gridkids and Soccer on weekends.......

Had a blast taking grandsons cruising last night!
