It doesn't matter if the road is straight and dry, a bad driver is a bad driver
Looks like he was heading the same direction as you, lost traction/control, crossed oncoming traffic, jumped the curb, and stopped right as he contacted the pole. As said above, possibilities are endless. In my opinion, he got lucky because it could have been much worse. Glad to see he is alright after the fact with the only injury being to his ego.

Hopefully he's a member, and will chime in with an explanation. I'm betting it was the BSM generating lift at moderately above posted speed, causing a loss of steering effectivity. No skid marks because the ABS functioned flawlessly.
The accident could be a result of almost anything. Driver inattention, driver intoxication, driver attempting to avoid another vehicle, pedestrian or animal in the road. During my time in law enforcement I saw many, many single vehicle accidents that are the result of a lot of different circumstances. Some are the fault of the operator, some are not. Can't tell without additional information.
If I had to make a wild speculation, my guess is dump truck. This region in general and this particular area due to the metro/subway/rail extension to Dulles, is inundated with multitudes of dump trucks. Many of these are poorly maintained and operated by inexperienced and/or unqualified drivers.
This one happened outside my brothers office in St. Charles Illinois.
Two young guys moving it around to the back of the dealership. It was just traded in.
