I'm interested in upgrading to a C5 in about a year. I already know I want a 2001-2004 C5. I just heard about a "Steering Column Lockout/Theft Deterrent" issue many of the C5s had and a recall was apparently issued. Is this true? Would a VIN or Carfax search show if the issue was repaired as a recall? The site I read this on: https://www.corvsport.com/c5-corvette-buyers-guide/

Thanks for all your info. If I read the info correctly, seems like the 2001 - 2004 years have the least amount of issues with this Steering Column Lockout issue? Those years may have just needed a "reprogram" type of maintenance performed on them?

All of the GM recall fixes will fail again, the only fix is aftermarket
1. All 1997 to 2000 C5's had a column lock. The LMC5 is the only fix that works for these.
2. All 2001 to 2004 Manual Trans C5's have a column lock. The LMC5 is the only fix that works for these.
3. All 2001 to 2004 Automatic C5's do not have a column lock. GM got a waiver for this. No need for any of the column lock bypasses.
All of the GM recalls band aided the situation and did not fix it. The LMC5 from Compliance parts is the fix. It installs at the BCM bypassing all of the column lock wiring and previous recalls. I have installed this on 3 C5's without issue.
To quantify the information on the column lock;
1. All 1997 to 2000 C5's had a column lock. The LMC5 is the only fix that works for these.

Thanks, Looks like I'll be avoiding this issue if I buy a 2001 and later automatic C5.

Spot on advice. If you want an automatic tranny car in the 01-04 model years, you're all set - no column lock worries.
the LMC5 is less than fifty dollars and takes 15 minutes to install ??????
Yes, you are correct that it's a quick fix for little $$. However, I want to relax and avoid constant shifting in traffic so an automatic for me it is.
has one of these ever locked up while driving?
Also, Can the lock be removed to avoid any of this?
Mine has had the recall but steering wheel is still locked, just ordered the LMC5 but would like to just remove the lock also if possible

one of the GM fixes was to modify the lock plate and the LMC5 shuts down that operation I believe !!!

I just installed the Compliance Parts LMC5 in my 02Z yesterday after my column locked up just as I was backing out of my driveway. Luckily I already had the kit in the glove box just in case. The install was easy with the excellent instructions provided. As part of the fix you also unplug the column lock relay which prevents power getting to the lock.

So then its impossible for it to lock up while driving once the LMC5 is installed?
If you install the LMC5 you might as well do the brown wire mod. Will save you time in case you have to do it later because you're still getting the "wait 10 sec" message once in a while.
